Philippine contemporary art

Contemporary Art is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in the
twenty-first century.

Modern Art
Includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s
to the 1970s. Abstraction is characteristic of much modern art.

Contemporary Art
Artist today explores ideas, concepts, questions, and practices that examine the past,
describe the present, and imagine the future.
In a light of such diversity, there is no simple or singular way to define contemporary
art.

THE NATIONAL ARTISTS

A: Literature
1. Amado V. Hernandez ( Hagonoy , Bulacan) 1973 (September 13, 1903 –
March 24, 1970)
- Practiced “committed art” and he was known as the “Manunulat ng
Manggagawa”
- To act as the conscience of the human spirit in the face of inequaty and
oppression.

- WORKS: Isang Dipang Langit, Mga Ibong Mandaragit
2. Nick Joaquin ( Paco, Manila) 1976 (May 4, 1917- April 29, 2004)
- Distinguish filipino writer in English writing: known as Quijano de Manila
- Exploration of the PH colonial past under Spain (psychological of social
danger)
- WORKS: The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Ballad of the Five Battles
3. Alejandro R. Roces ( Manila) 2003 (July 13, 1924 – May 23, 2011)
- The country’s best writer of comic short stories
- His works published in international magazines.
- Popularizing several local fiestas like Moriones and Ati- Atihan
- Independence day from July 4- June 12
4. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861 –
December 30, 1896)
- was a Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the end of the
Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is considered the national hero
of the Philippines.
- WORKS: Kundiman, Noli Me Tángere, El Filibusterismo, Mi último
adios
B: Sculpture
5. Guillermo Estrella Tolentino (July 24, 1890 – July 12, 1976)
- was a Filipino sculptor and professor of the University of the Philippines. He
was designated as a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture in 1973,
three years before his death.
- Works: Future Champion, Nene Guevarra and Oblation 1935

6. Napoleon Abueva
- Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva was known as the "Father of Modern
Philippine Sculpture" Through Proclamation No. 1539.
- He was proclaimed National Artist for Sculpture in 1976 when he was 46,
making him the youngest recipient of the award to date.
- He used almost all kinds of materials for his sculptures such as hard wood,
adobe, metal, stainless steel, cement, marble, bronze, iron, alabaster, coral
and brass.
- Works: Kaganapan, Kiss of Judas, The Transfiguration
7. Abdulmari Asia Imao (January 14, 1936 - December 16, 2014)
- was a Filipino painter and sculptor. Imao was named National Artist of the
Philippines for Visual Arts in 2006. A Tausūg, Imao is the first Moro to receive
the recognition.
- Aside from being a sculptor, Imao is also a painter, photographer, ceramist,
cultural researcher, documentary film maker, writer, and a patron of
Philippine Muslim art and culture.

C: Paintings
8. Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto - Paco, Manila (May 30, 1892- April 26, 1972)
- Excellent sketch artist as well as peerless master of light and color.
- Signiture techniques. Backlight his object, gently shading them with nuanced
color tones and haloing them with incandescent golden glow….
- Works: The booming of the Intendecia, Bataan, Afternoon Meal,
Princess Urduja
9. Carlos ( Botong) Francisco ( November 4, 1912- March 31, 1969)
- On of the Filipino Modernist
- Prime example of linear painting
- Art of mural in the Philippines
- Works: Pagpupukot, harana, The fiesta of Angono, Maria Makiling
(MAGPUPUKOT” means pulling the net. one of the famous painting during old times
at year 1957 .)
10. Vicente Silva Manansala ( January 22, 1910- August 22, 1981)
- Pioneer in Cubism
- Works: The bord selling, Luksong Tinik, Ang kababayo, Tiangge
D: Architecture
famous architect in the Philippines? Pablo Sebero Antonio, Sr.
11. Juan Felipe de Jesús Nakpil
- was a Filipino architect, teacher and a community leader. In 1973, he was
named one of the National Artists for architecture. He was regarded as the
Dean of Filipino Architects.
- Works: Rizal Theater, Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, Capital
Theater in Manila

E: Photography
12. Albert Garcia
- Pinatubo eruption was taken on Jun 15, 1991 by Filipino photographer
Alberto Garcia, the former chief photographer of Tempo, a tabloid affiliated
with the Manila Bulletin. Time, Newsweek, and Asia week all included the
picture in the 1991 great images of the year.

F: Cartoonist
13. Lauro "Larry" Zarate Alcala
- was a well-known editorial cartoonist and illustrator in the Philippines. In
2018, he was posthumously conferred the National Artist for Visual Arts title
and the Grand Collar of the Order of National Artists.
- Mang Ambo, Asyong Aksaya
14. Mars Ravelos (October 9, 1916 – September 12, 1988)
- Marcial "Mars" Custodio Ravelo was a Filipino comic book cartoonist and
graphic novelist.
- He is notable for creating Darna, Dyesebel, Captain
Barbell, Lastikman, Bondying, Varga, Wanted:
PerfectMother, Hiwaga, Maruja, Mariposa, Roberta, Rita, Buhay
Pilipino, Jack and Jill, Flash Bomba, Tiny Tony, and Dragonna among
others.
15. Carlo J. Caparas (born on December 15, 1948)
- Carlo Magno Jose Caparas is a Filipino comic strip creator and writer-turned
film director and producer.
- He is best known for creating such Filipino superheroes and comic book
characters as Panday, Bakekang, Totoy Bato, Joaquin Bordado,
Kamagong, Kamandag, Elias Paniki, Tasya Fantasya, Gagambino,
Pieta and Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang, among others
