Heat: Heat is the energy of random motion of molecules constituting the
body. It flows from a hot body to a cold body. Unit of heat is Joule (S.I.Unit), & erg (C.G.S. Unit), other unit is calorie. 1 calorie = 4.186 or 4.20 Joule & 1 Joule = 107erg 2. Temperature is the parameter which tells the thermal state of a body. 3. The expansion of a substance on heating is called the thermal expansion of that substance. 4. The expansion in the length of a substance is called “linear expansion”. 5. The expansion in the area of a substance is called “surface expansion” or “superficial expansion”. 6. The expansion in which the volume (length, breadth and thickness) of a substance is called “cubical expansion” or “volume expansion”. 7. On heating a rod, the increase in its length I) depends on the material of the rod, II) is directly proportional to its original length, III) is directly proportional to the increase in its temperature. 8. Coefficient of linear expansion of a substance is numerically equal to the increase in length of a rod of that substance of unit length when its temperature is increased by 1oC. 9. Coefficient of: Linear expansion: alpha 10.
