i. Introduction
Horizontal distances have required in surveying. So, in chaining toward a sloping ground, the
horizontal distances between two stations are measured carefully by applying some convenient
methods.Frequently, the lay of the land between the two points is not uniform, or the elevation
of the two points is very different. If the ground is not too rough and hilly and in general
considered as gently rolling, the taping procedure required would be slightly more difficult
than that required for taping on flat ground. If the plumb bob is used to keep the tape
horizontal, the procedure is more difficult. On a steep slope, a method finding horizontal is
breaking tape will be applied. The breaking tape method requires measuring horizontal
distances on the sloping ground without permitting the use of a full tape length, measuring
shorter distances at time to allow a tape to be held to horizontal at or below chest height. The
forward tape person places a pin at a tape mark. The rear tape person move ahead and holds a tape
mark at the pin while the forward tape person processed. This is repeated until the full 100 food
distance is marked. The produced is the same as when taping 100 foot length , only shorter segment.
