Recall

The earth’s lithosphere is divided into several segments called Plates.

Recall

Plates are gradually

moving.
Recall Majority of the formations of earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain
ranges are happening along plate boundaries.
Recall

Geologic features served as bases in marking the plate boundaries.

Examine the Plate Tectonic Map

1. What do the
arrows in the map
indicate?

2. Are all plates

moving on the
same direction?
Examine the Plate Tectonic Map

The arrows on the map tells the direction of movement of each plate. Each
Plate is slowly moving relative to each other, causing geologic events to
happen along their boundaries.
Types of Plate Boundaries
Convergent Plate Boundary

▪ the place where two plates move towards each other.

Convergent Plate Boundary

Subduction Zone

As two plates collide, collision zone is created and one of the leading edges of a
plate will be subducted and destroyed, that’s why it’s also known as destructive
plate boundary.

Divergent Plate Boundary
▪ the place where two plates are moving away from each
other.

▪ this is where the plate is being pulled apart.

Divergent Plate Boundary

Also known constructive plate boundary. As two plates move apart, it creates a
zone of tension and form a gap where molten materials will emerge and solidify
forming geologic features such as volcanoes or mountains.
Transform Fault Plate Boundary

▪ the plates are sliding past each other.

Transform Fault Plate Boundary

Also known conservative margins. Plates slide past each other, so that relative
movement is horizontal
Examine the movement of the plates and classify if it is
convergent, divergent or transform fault boundary.
