Is It?

Before we move on, take note some important concepts of this

lesson.

What is an inference?

Inference means identifying the clues that you use from the given situation or
scenario.
Sometimes you use clues from the story to figure out something that the author
doesn't tell you.
You may use phrases to state your inference like “I think”, “I infer”, “My
guess is…” or “ I guess” and “Maybe”.
When you make an inference, you “read between the lines” and use formula
or pattern to figure out things out in your own.

Study the pattern or formula given below :

Story Clues/
What I read

Experience/ What
I already know

Inference

First, think of some clues in the story or picture given. Then, add your own
experiences from what you already know based from the scenario given. In this way, you are
making inferences.
Study the examples below:

1. It was November 1st when Maria looked
at the mirror. She was dressed for the
night. She laughed at what she saw. “Not
even my friends will know who I am,” she
said.

What was Maria wearing?

I guess Maria is wearing a costume.

What clues in the story helped you to make this inference ?

The clues that help me figure out is when Maria says” Not even my
friends will know who I am”. Because it is November 1, most people are wearing
costumes during that night to have a party.

2. "Achoo!" Lito sneezed. He sneezed again

and then a third time. He felt very warm
and his head hurt. He dragged himself out of
bed and called his boss. He told his boss that he
wouldn'tbe going to work.

I
Why was Lito not going to work?

think Lito was sick.

What clues in the story helped you to make this inference?

The clues that helped me figure out is when Lito sneezed, felt
warm and his head hurt.

The Case of Missing Hopia

Hi! I am Mando from Lingayen, Pangasinan . I am living with my family together

with our pet - a rabbit, named “Happy”. Happy loves to eat hopia and even our family.
One of our hobbies is to eat together during snack time in the afternoon.
It was afternoon when the hopia went missing. I know the exact time because
the delivery man came through the door. The hopia was on a plate on the kitchen
bench when I walked out to get the door open. By the time I came back, it was gone!
I remember that I signed for the package that was delivered at exactly 3:23 pm.
I was distraught! I decided to search the kitchen for clues to find out who stole
my scrumptious hopia. As I was looking around, I found short brown hairs by the bottom
of the bench, just below where my hopia was. I continue to search further and found a
tennis ball just around the corner. It had a hopia crumbs on it! Who would have dropped
a short brown hair in the floor and left crumbs on a tennis ball?
There was a trail of crumbs leading toward the back door, which was open. The
crumbs led down the back stairs and onto the grass as I followed the trail, I saw . . .

Questions:

1. Who do you think stole the hopia?
