OUR COLLABORATION WITH BEDAYA
ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

We believe that the possibilities for a collaboration between Bedaya and Scene areendless.

What we can propose to achieve for Bedaya in the mid term are the following:

Bedaya Music Academy Bedaya Drama Academy

Bedaya Dance Academy A program of performing arts related activities and events
T H E S TA RT I N G P O I N T
B E D AYA M U S I C A C A D E M Y

The establishment of a specialized music academy is our preferred starting point for

this collaboration, and that is for the following reasons:

1. Prior experience in establishing a music school; and therefore

2. A good note on which to start the working relationship between our two entities.

3. A noted high level of interest amongst families in Kuwait, for their children to learn music.

4. Music is foundational for all other arts programs that will follow.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN PARTICULAR, MUSIC EDUCATION

• Instills the importance of discipline.

• Encourages teamwork.

• Teaches them to work in harmony with others.

• Increases overall intelligence.

• Boosts self confidence.

• Various studies have shown a clear link between musical and intellectual

capabilities. For example, children who study music have an increased verbal

memory of 16% over children who do not.

MUSIC EDUCATION IN KUWAIT
REGIONAL PIONEER IN PUBLIC SECTOR MUSIC EDUCATION

• The first music school was established in 1972

• The first music college was established in 1976

• Music Education department at the Public Authority for Applied

THE CURRENT STATE OF MUSIC IN KUWAIT

A critique of formal musical education

Despite the progressive and pioneering history, the current state of affairs is
not a promising one due to:

• The public institutions are geared towards adults and focused on academic curricula, with
no music school dedicated to children only.

• Music class in government schools has been neglected since the early 1990s, and has no
real impact on students.
THE CURRENT STATE OF MUSIC IN KUWAIT
Private sector - existing programs

• Harmony Academy

• Lapa

• Kuwait Music Academy

• Melody

• Lina Bakir

• Ahmadi Music Group (Richard Bushman)

THE CURRENT STATE OF MUSIC IN KUWAIT
PRIVATE SECTOR CRITIQUE

• No real strategic goals set.

• No proper curricula. Teaching is focused on pieces of music rather than

foundational learning.

• Inconsistent levels of teaching/teachers.

• Lack of up to date methods and technologies.

• Weak teaching methods when it comes to Arabic music, and shortage of its

required instruments in the local market.

OUR EXPERIENCE IN MUSIC TEACHINGS
JACC Music School

In 2017, we established the JACC Music School for children aged six to twelve

years old, with the following objectives:

1. To discover and cultivate musical talents.

2. To teach music in a serious academic manner (performance, notation, rhythm,

culture).
3. To use the most up to date curricula to teach Western music, and develop
equally modern and innovative approaches to teaching Middle Eastern music.

4. To establish the first Youth Orchestra in the region, within three years

5. To feed the future music scene with excellent musicians.

OUR EXPERIENCE IN MUSIC TEACHINGS
Results and and conclusions

1. We found a higher than expected level of interest and eagerness.

2. We found that good results were going to be possible within a reasonable

timeframe.
3. It’s better to create and develop our own curricula rather than copy existing
models.

4. We found that given the right standard of teaching, and proper assessment
of applicants, students had high levels of passion and readiness to learn.

5. Parents are serious and committed to their children’s musical education.

6. It is of utmost importance to invest in faculty that are qualified to teach

children specifically.
