Mid Term Examination
B.E. Mechatronics, 5th Semester Date: 26-09-2022, 13:00
Course Code: UEI508 Time: 2 Hours, Max. Marks: 50
Course name: Sensors and Actuators Name of faculty: Raja Rout

Note: All questions are compulsory. Answer all subsections of the question at one place only. Draw neat
and labeled diagrams whenever required.

Marks
Q1 (a) Explain various static characteristics of a measuring instrument. 5
(b) The expected value of voltage across a resistor is 75V, however the measurement 5
gives a value of 79V. Calculate (i) absolute error, (ii) % of error, (iii) % of
accuracy.

Q2 (a) Explain in brief the following calibration techniques (a) one-point calibration (b) 5
two-point calibration.

(b) The raw reading from a temperature sensor at boiling point is 95°C and at triple 5
point is —0.4° C respectively. Determine the calibrated sensor reading when the
raw reading from the sensor is 35° C.

Q3 (a) Explain the working principle of strain gauge sensor and discuss its types. 5
(b) A strain gauge having resistance 15011 is mounted on a cantilever beam at a 5
distance of 0.10m from free end. An unknown force is applied at the free-end
produces a deflection of 15 mm of the free end. The change in gauge resistance
is 0.1811 The beam is 0.2m length, 20mm width, and 3mm thickness. The
Young modulus of steel is 200 GN/m2. Calculate the Poisson's ratio.

Q4 Discuss the necessity of temperature compensation in LVDT. Furthermore, design 10

the temperature compensation circuit and explain its functioning.

Q5 A mems-based capacitive accelerometer has total seismic mass = 1.5mg, spring 10

constant=6N/mg, and damping coefficient is 2Ns/m. Determine, after how much
time it can provide a steady-state acceleration reading.
