student cope up with academic stress successfully such as to use campus resources, stay

present when attention has drifted to future or past and gently refocus to present moment,

learn new skills through practice, use positive self-talk, take responsibility for mistakes,

forgive yourself, focus on what you can control, and practice good self-care.

and the COVID-19 health crisis lockdown further worsened it. High academic stress has a
negative impact on students learning and overall performance. The study is done to assess

perceived academic stress, causes, and coping strategies among undergraduate pharmacy

According to Aina & Wijayati (n.d.) Coping the Academic Stress: The Way the

Students Dealing With Stress | KnE Social Sciences. This study is intended to ascertain the

students’ causes and coping strategies I concerning the academic stress. The data

interpretation affirms that the substancial source of academic stress is the students’ worries

about their examinations in which 60% students admitting this subscale. Simultaneously,

the prevalent coping strategies work with the subjects are finding the comfort feeling in

spiritual beliefs by praying or meditating (52.%) whilst accepting the reality and trying with it

(52.6). in contrast only few of the students (5.3%) are rarely using drugs and alcohol to

make themselves feel better.

Jeyasingh (2022), Coping Strategies for Adolescents Dealing with Academic Stress

cited that stress has become an unavoidable part of everyday life, anything that poses a
challenge or a threat to our well-being is considered stressful. Most parents and teachers

have higher expectations of their children, but this expectation increases pressure on

students, making them feel more stressed. In this study, causes of academic stress among

adolescents were determined and the possible way of stress management were pointed

out. It is suggested that schools develop counseling centers and implement services such

as social support groups for students by the counseling experts periodically. It is also vital

to educate students on the negative consequences of stress.

Kuncharin & Mohamad (2017) conducted a study on Coping Strategies on Academic

Performance among Undergraduate Students in Malaysia to evaluate the effectiveness of

coping startegies among undergraduate students in Malaysia. The study used the Three

Scales of Academic Coping Strategies namely Approach Coping Strategy, Avoidance

Coping Strategy and Social Support Coping Strategy. The findings showed that 83.3% of

the respondents agreed that Approach Coping Strategy helped them to cope up with

academic performance problems. Furthermore, 82.2% of students agreed for Social

Support Coping Strategy helped them to cope with academic performance problems and

69.8% of students agreed with the Avoidance Coping Strategy helped them to cope with

academic performance problems.

Mary Chris A. Austria-Cruz (2019) on her study “Academic Stress and Coping

Strategies of Filipino College Students in private and public universities in Central Luzon”

explored the academic stress and coping mechanisms of three hundred eighty-two (382)

college students from public and private universities in Central Luzon, Philippines using

descriptive design. Result showed that major contributors to the respondents’ stress were

from teachers, completion of requirements and peers who commit cheating. They felt

academically stressed and experience sleeping problems, low self-confidence and

moodiness. Respondents coped with stress through spirituality, one of the prominent traits

of Filipinos. The study highlights the need to comply with the mental health protocol and to

create avenues to attain well-being for students with varying interests.

C. Gomez et al., (2021). Stress and coping strategies of senior high school students:

basis for action plan specifically aimed to make a plan of action on how to reduce the stress
level of the senior high school students. The researcher determined the stress level and the

coping strategies of the male and female students respectively. Results showed that both

male and female students had an average level of stress. The level of stress of both male

and female students is average for academic and financial sources. Moreover, the female

students had low level of stress for psychological and health related stressors while the

male students had average level for the said stressors. In addition, the results revealed that

male and female students had different coping strategies in dealing with stress. Female

students always employed spending time with friends, listening to music, eating a lot, going

to some places and keeping their faith to their God as coping strategies. On the other hand,

male students did not always employ coping strategies when they are stress. Both male

and female students never isolate themselves when they are stressed.

Aini, (2017) stated on her study that differences between the education system of

senior high school and college can cause stress on students, especially for new students.

This problem requires students looking for ways to address these issues by using a coping

mechanism. The result showed that 51% of students experiencing low academic stress and

high stress on 49%. The highest cause of stress was academic factors and the lowest was

environmental factors. The majority of the coping mechanism at the level of moderately
adequate. Coping strategies that have used are problem solving and problem focused

engagement. Based on the findings, teach stress management, counseling, socialization of

how learning programs should be undertaken by new nursing students for college later and

reduce the academic burden on first semester because for this semester students is still in

the adaptation stage.

According to Pillai et al., (2023), education stress is widely recognized as one of the

most important precursors leading to depression in adolescent life. This study explores the

prevalence of academic stress among high school going adolescents, contributing factors

and the coping strategies used by the students. Most of the children studying in high school

have minimal to moderate stress. The main factors that contribute to stress more are

female gender, low parental education level, and poor final exam grade. Positive

association for factors like parental pressure with increasing age was present. Most of the

students used different coping strategies to cope with the education stress. Students often

use active coping strategies compared to passive coping strategies.
