AutoCAD
Isometric drawing
At the end of this tutorial, you
will be able to:
• Learn another method to enter coordinates using
Direct Distance Entry (DDE).
• Draw isometric drawings using AutoCAD.
Direct Distance Entry (DDE)
 DDE is a way of bypassing the usual ways of entering in
coordinates by just entering the distance.

 If you want to draw a line with a specified distance D, then:

1) Start the LINE command.
2) Select the first point to start.
3) Move the mouse cursor to the direction of the line to be
drawn.
4) Enter the exact distance (D) on the command prompt.

 Example:

3
Exercise 4.1
 Draw an isometric drawing of the following
object:

4
 Create new file using “acad.dwt” template file.
 Type DDRMODES command and set as
follows:

 Make sure you turn ON ORTHO and OSNAP.

5
6
Draw the left side wall of the box (front view)
 Use ISOPLANE command to specify the current
isometric plane.
 Select left isoplane by typing LEFT or L.

7
Command: isoplane
Current isoplane: Left
Start
Enter isometric plane setting point
[Left/Top/Right] <Top>: left (Draw

Current isoplane: Left clockwise)
Command: line

8
Draw the top view of the box
 Quick button to switch isoplane: F5
 Switch to top isoplane by pressing F5.
AutoCAD will show <Isoplane Top>.

9
Start

10
Draw the right side view of the box
 Switch to right isoplane by pressing F5.
AutoCAD will show <Isoplane Right>.

11

12
 Create the angle lines to
add the angled surface.
 Turn off ORTHO for a
while.

13
 Finish up by drawing the only circle in the picture.
 Make sure you turn on back ORTHO.
 Switch back to left isoplane by pressing F5.
 Use ELLIPSE command, select isocircle to draw
the ellipse.
