The first four are adapted from well known orchestral solos, which should be practised by all saxophonists for intonation and control of low notes. Then there are two examples of the wealth of Elizabethan music, much of which makes ideal transcription material, and finally two original pieces by contemporary composers. Paul Harvey. 1977 1. L’Arlesienne Georges Bizet (1838 - 75) The famous saxophone solo from Bizet’s incidental music to the play by Alphonse Daudet. It represents “‘L’innocent”; a pathetic, simple-minded youth. 2. The Old Castle, from “Pictures at an Exhibition” Modest Mussorgsky (1839 - 81) ‘One of ten reproductions of pictures by the Russian artist Victor Hartmann. It represents the idea of a troubadour singing beneath the walls of the castle in olden days. 3. Barcarolle, from “Sylvia” Leo Delibes (1836 - 91) ‘The saxophone solo from Act Three of this famous ballet. 4, The Battle and Defeat of Napoleon, from “Hary Janos” Zoltan Kodaly (1882 - 1967) ‘One of the tall stories of the Hungarian old soldier. The saxophone in its most sardonic mood describes the rout of the French Army and its ignominious retreat. 5. What is Beauty but a Breath? Thomas Greaves (1604) A lovely song by a lesser known Elizabethan composer. 6. Pavane for the Earl of Salisbury William Byrd (1543 - 1623) One of this great Elizabethan composer's best virginal pieces. 7. Lullaby for a Saxophone Dorothy Harvey A study in quiet sustained playing. 8. In Memoriam Scott Fitzgerald Carey Blyton An evocation of nostalgia for the era of this ill-fated novelist. This is an arrangement by the composer of the first of many pieces which he has written for the London Saxophone Quartet.
