Abstract
This paper focuses on the optimization of thin-walled open cross-section laminated composite column subjected to uni-
axial compressive load. The cross-section of the column is parameterized in such a way that it can represent a variety of
shapes including most of the regular cross-sections such as H, C, T, and I sections. The objective is to obtain the best
possible shape of the cross-section, by keeping a constant total material volume, which can maximize the ultimate
load carrying capacity of the column. The ultimate strength of the column is determined by considering both buckling
instability and material failure. For material failure, Tsai-Wu composite failure criterion is considered. As analytical solu-
tions for these parameterized column models are not tractable, the ultimate loads of the composite columns are com-
puted through finite-element analysis in ANSYS. And, the optimization is carried out by coupling these finite-element
results with a genetic algorithm based optimization scheme developed in MATLAB. The optimal result obtained through
this study is compared with an equivalent base model of cruciform cross-section. Results are reported for various lengths
and boundary conditions of the columns. The comparison shows that a substantial increase of the ultimate load, as high as
610%, can be achieved through this optimization study. Thus, the present paper highlights some important characteristics
of open cross-sections that can be useful in the design of thin-walled laminated column structures.

Abstract. Position of a circular or elliptical cutout within an orthotropic plate has great influence on its buckling behavior. This
paper aims at finding the optimal position (both location and orientation) of a single circular/elliptical cutout, within an
orthotropic rectangular plate, that maximizes the critical buckling load. We consider linear buckling of simply supported
orthotropic plates under uniaxial edge loads. To obtain the optimal positions of the cutouts, we have employed a MATLAB
optimization routine coupled with buckling computation in ANSYS. Our results show that the position of the cutout that
maximizes the buckling load has great dependence on the material properties, laminate configurations, and the geometrical
parameters of the plate. These optimal results, for a number of plate geometries and cutout sizes, are reported in this paper. These
results will be useful in the design of perforated orthotropic plates against buckling failure.

Abstract. This paper deals with the location optimization of a cutout within a laminated
cantilever beam for maximizing the lateral buckling load. Various shapes of cutout, such
as circular, elliptical, triangular, are generally used in structural components as a design
requirement or sometime to reduce the overall weight of the structures. In this study, a laminated
cantilever beam, with a single cutout, is considered. The beam is subjected to a concentrated
load at the free end. The objective is to obtain the optimal location of the cutout which resist
maximum lateral buckling load. For this an optimization routine has been used in which a
finite element calculation of critical lateral buckling load in ANSYS is coupled with an in-built
global optimization tool (Genetic Algorithm) in MATLAB. The optimal results are reported
for various cases arising from change of geometry and material properties of the plate. It has
been concluded that the position of cutout in the laminated beam plays a significant role while
designing against lateral buckling load.

1. Introduction
Composite materials, due to their desirable characteristics such as low weight and high strength,
are widely used in engineering applications such as aerospace component, shipping industries,
automotive parts and defence application [1]. It has been also found that thin beam made up
of composite materials are used as structural components in these engineering structures. Of-
ten, these structural components are subjected to various types of loading e.g. lateral, axial,
torsional loads. Due to these loads, beams are likely to fail due to buckling instability. When a
laminated beam is subjected to loads that are perpendicular to the beams axis, the beam will
have lateral displacement in the downward direction and it might become unstable in a twisting
mode. In this twisting mode the cross-section rotate about the beam axis. This is termed as
the lateral buckling of the beam. The load at which buckling occurs is called the critical lateral
buckling load. For design requirement, these structures are often provided with cutout or hole to
provide access for inspection, electric lines and fuel lines etc. Therefore, study of lateral buckling
characteristics of composite beam with cutout is necessary in the design process of the structure.

In the literature, many research papers can be found that investigate the effect of cutout on
