Title: Comparative Studies on the word “Look” in English and Armenian

Introduction

The aim of this study is to do comparative analysis of English word “look” and its
Armenian equivalent “նայել”. The main purpose is to show the similarities and
differences of the meanings of this word and find a logical connection to them.

The etymology of the word ”look”

Old English locian "use the eyes for seeing, gaze, look, behold, spy," from West
Germanic *lokjan (source also of Old Saxon lokon "see, look, spy," Middle Dutch loeken
"to look," Old High German luogen, German dialectal lugen "to look out"), a word of
unknown origin. Breton lagud "eye" has been suggested as a possible cognate.

Meanings of “look” in English

According to Cambridge School Dictionary the word “look” has following meanings

-as a verb
1.See- to turn your eyes in the direction of something or someone so that you can see
them
He was looking out of the window.

2.Search- to try to find someone or something

I’ve looked everywhere but I can’t find my dog.

4.It looks like;it looks as if- used to say that something is likely to happen
It looks like he isn’t coming.

According to Cambridge School Dictionary

Look at/see something through rose-coloured/rose-tinted glasses-to see only the

pleasant things about a situation and not notice the things that are unpleasant:
She's always looked at life through rose-tinted glasses.
Նա կյանքին միշտ վարդագույն ակնոցներով էր նայում:

Լook back-to think about something that happened in the past:

When I look back I can see where we went wrong.
Երբ հետ եմ նայում հասկանում եմ, որտեղ ենք մենք սխալվել:

Լook before you leap- to check that something is not going to cause problems or
have a bad result before you do it.
The general advice with a job offer is to do your research and look before you leap.

Meanings of “look” in Armenian

According to ‘’Արդի հայերենի բացատրական բառարան’’ the word ‘’նայել’’ has
following meanings

1. Հայացքը ուղղել մեկին՝ մի բանի, մտիկ անել:

Քու հայելվույդ մեջ անապակ նայեն զիրենք Վարդն ու աղջիկ (ՄՊ)։
In your pure mirror let them look, Rose and girl.

2. Ուշադրություն դարձնել, ուշք դարձնել:

Կաթին նայիր, չթափվի (Մլխ.):
Watch the milk, it'll spill.

3. Ուղղված՝ դարձած լինել դեպի: Պատշգամբը նայում էր ծովին։

The balcony looks the sea.

4. Սպասել:
Երկար տարիներ նա ամուսնու գալուն էր նայում... (ԳԹ):
She was waiting for husband's return for years.

5. Ապավինել մեկին՝ մի բանի, մեկից մի բան ակընկալել՝ սպասել, մեկի՝ մի բանի

Analyses

From these comparative studies on the word ‘’look’’ it is seen that the word ‘’look’’ has
23 meanings (as a verb and noun) in English and 21 meanings in Armenian. There are
7 similar meanings and 18 different meanings. The differences are mainly observed in
the parts of speech. For example “That food looks nice” in Armenian will be “Այդ
ուտեստը լավ տեսք ունի”: The verb ‘’look’’ is translated as a ‘’glance’’ in some places.
In English there are synonym words for ‘’look’’ which have different usage in
sentences. These are ‘’see’’ and ‘’watch’’. ‘’See’’ means to notice people and things with
your eyes (She saw a big spider and screamed) which in Armenian will be translated as
a “տեսնել” (Նա մեծ սարդ տեսավ և գոռաց). “Watch” means to look at something for
a period of time, usually something which moves or changes (He watched television all
evening) which in Armenian will be translated as a “դիտել” (Նա ամբողջ երեկո
հեռուստացույց դիտեց). There is a meaning for “look” in English that is translated in
Armenian as a “see”: “It’s not a good idea to travel without insurance: look what
happened to Bill” “Առանց ապահովագրության չամփորդելը լավ միտք չէ. տես թե
ինչ եղավ Բիլին”. Or here in Armenian “նայիր” is translated as a “watch”. Կաթին
նայիր, չթափվի: Watch the milk, it'll spill.
There are some sentences where “look” is not translated at all such as “He looked back
on his childhood with affection” will be ”Նա սիրով էր հիշում իր մանկությունը”. In

Armenian if we translate the word “look back” as a “ետ նայել”, it will have different
meaning which is not acceptable in this sentence.
There are 4 similar idioms in English and Armenian, only the idiom “Լook before you
leap” in translation doesn’t have the word “նայել” in it, but has its equivalence in
Armenian which is “յոթը չափիր, մեկը կտրիր”.
The phrasal verb "to look down on sb” can be translated in Armenian in two ways. First
is literal translation “Ներքևից նայել” and the second is with the help of antonym of the
word “down”, ”Վերևից նայել”. However, it should be noted that ”Վերևից նայել” is
more acceptable, because it means “to treat with contempt” which is closer meaning to
English. Overall from this work it is concluded that the word “look” has more similar
meanings to Armenian word “նայել” than different meanings.
