Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the human resource frame
2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My role within Global Self Storage is Senior Assistant to Vice President of Operations and a

Site Manager for one of the eleven facilities we operate and manage. Within this role, members

of our organization are required to advise me of any attendance occurrences. To give an instance,

we have had another site manager call in multiple times within a month due to illness. The

situation escalated due to the number of times this employee was absent.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

As discussed in Chapter 6 of Reframing Organizations, “People and organizations need each

other. Organizations need ideas, energy, and talent; people need careers, salaries, and

opportunities.” (Bolman & Deal, 2021) To further support, Bolman and Deal (2021) states the 6

options that Argyris pointed out to support his view. Out of the 6, it is said that employees tend

to withdraw through chronic absenteeism or simply by quitting.

The Human Resource of my organization influences this situation because of the number of

absences that was not questioned. This member was allowed to have so many absences but later

was found at fault for falling behind. In my opinion, there was a disconnect to ask what were this

member’s needs? I feel like we did not give this person an opportunity to provide her security to

recover from any illness.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

With using the human resource for an alternative course of action, I would make sure to

consider the basic human needs of my employee. I would empower them to feel confident to

have a conversation with leadership to allow time off without the penalty. I would support open

communication. I would also develop a relationship of advocacy.

With recommending human resource as an alternative course of action, I am able to put the

needs of this members health first. It will also offer our organization an opportunity to allow this

member to take the necessary time apart from work to recover her health. This will directly

provide our organization an opportunity to accommodate our members in the event they do

because severely ill. Which in turn, will prevent less absences and promote an environment of

meeting our members needs.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently give what you have learned
about this frame.

In this situation, reflecting on what I would do differently is making sure members in our

organization feel that their job is protected. In my opinion, an organization that works with you

especially in a time of need is important. When thinking of the Human Resource frame in this

scenario, giving our members security of keeping their job even through sickness speak volumes.

This action would be sending the message that will take human needs and heath seriously. To

compare to what I would not do differently is holding members accountable. It is as important to

make sure to hold any members accountable for any missed shift that occur often. We would not

like our message to get crossed between allowing so many absent occurrences to go unnoticed.
