Southern California Inland Empire comprising middle and high school girls. From Monday
June 13th to Friday June 17th, the five-day camp takes place 8am - 3:30pm PDT, hosting a
series of cybersecurity awareness, training, and career mentoring sessions designed to
stimulate interest and competency in cyber content and career development. With the support
of the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council, faculty instructors of local school districts, and

GenCyber FAQs
What is GenCyber?
Sponsored by the National Security Agency and National Science Foundation, GenCyber at
California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) is a Cybersecurity focused series camp
coordinated through a partnership between CSUSB and the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio
Council (GSSGC). Registered participants experience an engaging, in-person adventure at the
CSUSB main campus over a five-day period Monday-Friday 8:30 - 3:30pm. The program
introduces campers to cyber concepts and careers through interactions with cybersecurity
industry experts, hands-on experiences with coding, forensics, teambuilding, and activities led
by CSUSB faculty and students. You can learn more about the national GenCyber program at
www.gen-cyber.com.

What is Cybersecurity and why should girls get involved?

Cybersecurity is the body of technologies, processes and practices designed to protect
networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access. If you
use a cell phone, online bank, email, or shop online, cybersecurity awareness is vitally important
to you. CSUSB is one of the leading universities in cybersecurity education, providing GenCyber
curriculum and activities inspired by current real-world technical challenges and student-led
projects. Cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing career fields with high anticipated growth.
Our participants will be on the cutting edge of tomorrow’s career candidates by learning these
skills. GenCyber camps were created to inspire campers towards a passion in becoming
cybersecurity professionals.

The GenCyber Camp hosted by CSUSB aims to address both the key objectives of NSA’s
GenCyber program but also our region’s underserved community. This is done by cultivating a
growing interest, education pathways, and career fields in cybersecurity. Additionally, educated
women have a greater chance of escaping poverty, leading healthier and more productive lives,
and raising the standard of living for their communities.

For these reasons, we have made it a priority to serve this target population through the
GenCyber program.

How much does it cost to participate in GenCyber?

There is no fee to attend, the cost is covered by grants. CSUSB applied for and received
funding from the National Security Agency to support this program. GSSGC is invited by
CSUSB to provide participants for this program. The cost of running the program for each girl is
$1,500.
What are the dates and times for GenCyber 2022 and where does it take place?
GenCyber requires student attendance at all dates listed:

Monday-Friday June 13-17th 8:30am - 3:30pm

The camp is hosted at the CSUSB main campus:

5500 University Parkway
San Bernardino, CA 92407

Who is eligible to participate in GenCyber?

Girls currently in grades 7-12 are eligible for the summer camp. Campers do not need to be
registered Girl Scouts to participate in GenCyber.

Can campers attend for only one day or leave early every day?
No, we expect participants who register for GenCyber to attend the entirety of the camp. We
understand last minute emergencies do arise but request that you do not schedule
appointments, classes, or vacations during the same dates as GenCyber. We are obligated to
provide service to a specific number of participants throughout the camp period to meet grant
requirements; failure for registered participants to attend threatens our opportunity to offer this
program in future years.

Can campers be partnered with a buddy or their troop?

Registered participants will be assigned to groups based on their experience with cybersecurity
and the age of the participants. This will ensure that the programming provided is appropriate to
all participants. Activities will vary for groups with previous GenCyber participants.

Who supervises the campers during GenCyber?

Participants will be assigned to a group for the series. Each group will have Girl Scout Volunteer
staff and CSUSB Cybersecurity students as group leaders. Safety Activity Checkpoints will be
followed at all times. Anyone working directly with the girls will have a background check on
record.

Who can volunteer at GenCyber?

Registered and background cleared Girl Scout adults who are available to assist for the full
series are welcomed to volunteer. CSUSB and affiliate faculty, staff, and students are
encouraged every year to participate. Please complete this registration form if you are
interested in volunteering. Volunteers will be selected based on need.

Can a camper participate more than once?

Yes. With new presenters coming in each year, we will have some changes to the program and
activities. The high school program is a completely refreshed curriculum from past years.
Who leads activities at GenCyber?
Industry professionals visit from around the country as well as CSUSB and partnering institution
faculty, staff, and students. Past industry mentors include: Google, IBM, Facebook, CISCO, DHS,
Bank of America, Northrup Grumman, and Booz Allen Hamilton.

How will campers benefit from participating in these programs?

Campers will come face to face with cybersecurity faculty, staff, students, and professionals who
can open up possibilities and opportunities for cybersecurity education pathways. CSUSB is
looking forward to many more young minds taking this pathway and pursuing their education at
the San Bernardino campus. Camp participants are developing confidence with technology,
becoming comfortable on a college campus, and interacting with mentors as well as
establishing friendships with girls from all areas of our council.

It’s a free program, so is there a penalty if I have to cancel at the last minute?
As a partner on the CSUSB grant, GSSGC commits to providing a specific number of
participants. Last minute cancellations endanger our participation in future grant funded
programs. Please be sure your girl is available and committed to participating in the entire
program before signing up. Over $1500 per girl is invested into the planning and facilitation of
this event. While you may not be out any money if you decide not to send your girl last minute,
our partners, our council and our funders are wasting money if registered campers do not show.

Will there be a waiting list for GenCyber? When will I be notified if space opens for my
girls if we are on the waiting list?
We anticipate having a waiting list for GenCyber, do not hesitate to register as spaces fill quickly.
A waitlist will be created once all spots are filled and campers on that list will be notified if/when a
spot opens.

What can I do to help ensure this program continues in future years?

We appreciate your letters of support or thanks for CSUSB, participating companies, and funders
for this event. Video testimonials from the campers about their experience at GenCyber would
also make a huge impact on the funders and companies involved in GenCyber. Be creative and
show your appreciation to all involved in making this program a reality for our organizations! We
also appreciate your feedback on program evaluations.
