Blog Post #1 Questions:

1) What are you planning to do for your Capstone project?

I am planning to learn to play the piano, the goal for now is to learn to play a song of
medium difficulty from memory. I say for now as I am unaware of how difficult this will
be for me to complete within the time frame I have.

a. Why have you chosen this topic?

I have chosen this topic as I have fond memories of learning to play “Twinkle
Twinkle Little Star” on the piano at my late grandma’s house. I also have a deep interest
in music as a whole and would love to be able to play my own favourite songs for myself
and maybe others. I have attempted other instruments before which have resulted in a
loss of interest, but piano is something I have been interested in for years.

b. Why does it excite, inspire or fascinate you?

I think music is a beautiful art form that anyone can participate in and enjoy. I
have a passion for the arts, but music is an art I have yet to dive into and I plan to use this
as an opportunity to dive into it.

c. Who could possibly help/guide/mentor you while you complete your project?
I have found multiple YouTube channels that specialize in teaching older
people (not kids) how to play the piano so I can learn in a way that actually makes sense
for me. Aside from YouTube, I know someone who teaches piano for a living and can
always reach out to them, I can also reach out to the school's music teacher and friends
with piano experience.

2) What inquiry question(s) are you considering for your project?

What skills do I need to have to accurately play a song on the piano? Is piano something I could pursue if
I wish to?

3) What do you anticipate the obstacles and challenges to be?

Obtaining a piano, I do not have one nor do I know anyone with one I could borrow so, I
will likely have to purchase one for myself. I expect myself to be impatient in the learning
process which will likely be an issue, but I will remind myself that you cannot learn
anything in 1 go. I also believe that reading sheet music will be difficult, I have never
been able to understand it so far.

4) How do you plan to overcome your challenges to be successful with your Capstone
project?
As I stated above, I will likely have to constantly remind myself that no one can learn
piano in 1 go as well as create a ‘schedule’ of sorts to not burn myself out of it. When it
comes to sheet music, I am going to attempt to find possibly an alternative in case it
starts to set me back. As for obtaining a piano, I have been searching Marketplace and
Craigslist for pianos under $100 as I do not wish to spend more than that on the piano
itself.
