1. An electron moving horizontally with a velocity of 4 × 104 𝑚/𝑠 enters a region of
uniform magnetic field of 10−5 T acting vertically upward as shown in the figure.
Draw its trajectory and find out the time it takes to come out of the region of
magnetic field.

2. (a) How is a toroid different from a solenoid?


(b) Use Ampere’s circuital law to obtain the magnetic field inside a toroid.
(c) Show that in an ideal toroid, the magnetic field (i) inside the toroid and (ii) outside
the toroid at any point in the open space is zero.

3. (a) Write the expression for the force 𝐹⃗ acting on a particle of mass m and charge q
⃗⃗. Under what conditions will it move in (i)
moving with velocity 𝑣⃗ in a magnetic field 𝐵
a circular path and (ii) a helical path?
(b) Show that the kinetic energy of the particle moving in Magnetic field remains
constant.

4. Two long straight parallel conductors carry steady current 𝐼1 and 𝐼2 separated by a
distance d. if the currents are flowing in the same direction, show how the magnetic
fields set up if one produces an attractive force on the other. Obtain the expression
for this force. Hence define one ampere.

5. (a) Write the expression for the force 𝐹⃗ , acting on a charged particle of charge ‘q’,
moving with a velocity 𝑣⃗ in the presence of both electric field 𝐸⃗⃗ and magnetic field 𝐵 ⃗⃗.
Obtain the condition under which the particle moves undeflected through the fields.
(b) A rectangular loop of size 𝑙 × 𝑏 carrying a steady current I is placed in a uniform
magnetic field 𝐵 ⃗⃗. Prove that the torque 𝜏⃗ acting on the loop is given by, 𝜏⃗ = 𝑚 ⃗⃗
⃗⃗⃗ × 𝐵
where 𝑚 ⃗⃗⃗ is the magnetic moment of the loop.

6. Two identical circular loops, P and Q, each of radius r and carrying equal currents are
kept in the parallel planes having a common axis passing through O. the direction of

current in P is clockwise and in Q is anti – clockwise as seen from O which is


equidistant from the loops P and Q. find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at
O.

7. A rectangular coil of sides ‘l’ and ‘b’ carrying a current I is subjected to a uniform
magnetic field⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐵, acting perpendicular to its plane. Obtain the expression for the
torque acting on it.

8. A circular coil of N turns and radius R carries a current I. It is unwound and rewound
to make another coil of radius R/2, current I remaining the same. Calculate the ratio
of the magnetic moments of the new coil and the original coil.

9. State Bio-Savart’s law, Write in vector form.

10.Use Biot-Savart law to obtain an expression for the magnetic field at the centre of a
coil bent in the form of a square of side 2a carrying current I.

11.Derive the expression for the magnetic field in the vector form at a point on the axis
of a circular current carrying loop.

12.Fig., shows a current loop having two circular segments and joined by two radial
lines. Find the magnetic field at the centre O.

13.Two identical coils P and Q each of radius R are lying in perpendicular places such
that they have a common centre. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic
fields at the common centre of the two coils, if they carry currents equal to I and √3𝐼.

14.State Ampere’s circuital law. Use this law to obtain the expression for the magnetic
field inside an air cored straight solenoid having turn density n and current I.

18.Draw a labelled diagram of a moving coil galvanometer. Describe briefly its principle
& working. How will you convert galvanometer into (i) ammeter (ii) Voltmeter.

20.A rectangular coil having each turn of length 5 cm and breadth 2 cm is suspended
freely in a radial magnetic field of induction 2.5 x 10-2 Wb m-2, torsional constant of
the suspension fibre is 1.5 x 10-8 Nm rad-1. The coil deflects through an angle of 0.2
radian when a current of 2 µA is passed through it. Find the number of turns of the
coil.

21.An ammeter of resistance 0.80Ω can measure currents upto 1.0 A. (i) What must be
the shunt resistance to enable the ammeter to measure current upto 5.0 A? (ii) What
is the combined resistance of the ammeter and the shunt?
22.A galvanometer can be converted into a voltmeter of certain range by connecting a
resistance of 980Ω in series with it. When the resistance is 470Ω connected in series,
the range is halved. Find the resistance of the galvanometer.

23.(i) A straight thick long wire of uniform cross-section of radius ‘a’ is carrying a steady
current I. Use Ampere’s circuital law to obtain a relation showing the variation of the
magnetic field (B) inside and outside the wire with distance r, (r ≤ 𝑎) and (r > a) of
the field point from the centre of it cross-section. Plot a graph showing the variation
of field B with distance r.
(ii) Calculate the ratio of magnetic field at a point a/2 above the surface of the wire to
that at a point a/2 below its surface. What is the maximum value of the field of this
wire?
