PIPING CLEANING PROCEDURE

4.1 QUICK DECOMPRESSION

The piping is filled with pressurized air to the desired pressure, then open the prepared
temporary valve that be able to operated quickly which has been installed in the pipe.
The permanent valve in the system with ball type and butterfly type valve does not
necessary to be removed, but the globe type valve shall be removed and replaced with
temporary valve spool or ball/butterfly type during activity. This method will dispose the
dirt inside the pipe and make the erosion of the wall of pipe will be removed caused of
high velocity of air when the temporary valve opened.

5. CLEANING CLASSIFICATION AND ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Reference for fluid medium used for blowing activities mentioned in Attachment – 1
Blowing Classification Table included the acceptance criteria.
Line to be cleaned shall follow the standard method, type duty of the system and
subsystem in accordance with the project specifications and VENDOR recommendations
and information.

6. PROTECTION
During blowing activities, a large number of air-polluted will come out from the system.
Blowing by Quick Decompression will produce air-polluted containing particles such as
sand, rust, dirt and will be carried in high speed. It may cause damage the equipment
that installed In-Line Pipes. Therefore it should be removed and replaced by temporary
pipe spool or blind flange before blowing performed. The equipment which shall be
removed are :
 Control valve and check valve
 Safety valve
 Calibrated orifice
 Flow meter
 Steam traps
 Internal filter and strainer
 Thermowell and etc.

PIPING CLEANING PROCEDURE

Line process impulse for the instrument must be isolated with a block valve on impulse
itself and if possible the connection should be removed.
If the coupling of the flange must be opened to make the out flow, then it must be
checked that the work performed does not generate stress in the flange
upstream/downstream pumps and compressors.
Blowing generally does not pass through a tank or vessel. However, if the tank or vessel
used as an air reservoir, the internal parts shall be removed prior to start blowing to
prevent damage.
Blowing also may cause damage to insulation materials, electric motors, and so on.
Therefore, the following items should be done (if necessary) before conducting blowing :
 Protecting equipment by covering with a tarpaulin/cover sheet for the motors,
insulation, and instrumentation equipment near of blow point.
 Redirecting the output stream to a place where there are no easily breakable
equipment. It can be done by rotating the elbow to change the direction of flow.
 Adding dummy spool to extend the blow point further.

7. SAFETY INSPECTION
Before conducting blowing there are some safety items that must be accomplished first.
 Identify all risks and precautions of this work.
 Make PTW (Permit To Work) and JSA (Job Safety Analysis) based on risks and
precautions that have been made. Make sure that PTW and JSA already approved
by HSE person and OWNER.
 Install barricade and put warning board around the blowing area. Coordinate with
HSE person first before conducting this item. The barricade must be install by radius
that already accepted in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) document.
 Make sure only authorized persons are around the working area.
 Make sure that all personnels already wore PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
properly that already accepted in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) document before
conducting this work.
 Check noise level around the area. If noise level is more than 100 dB, conduct

 Inform to all workers that blowing will be conducted especially to workers in height.

8. BLOWING PROCEDURE

8.1 PREPARATION

Before conducting blowing, there are some activities that need to be accomplished first.
There are :
 Document Checking
 Mark Up PID
 Field Survey
 Additional Materials and Tools
 Securing Area
8.1.1 Document Checking
Verify all documents belonging to the dossier Construction of Completion for Piping
(installation, welding, NDE, line check, tightening the bolt, pressure test, etc.) before
conducting blowing activities. Check all punchlist category A. It must be already
completed and approved by OWNER.
8.1.2 Mark Up PID
CONTRACTOR shall prepare and issue Mark Up PID (test package) according to the
latest PID. The following items shall be indicated in the Mark Up PID :
 The line number of piping to be blowed out and exhaust
 Location of isolation blinds/valve
 Location of intake and blow point

 Do line check with OWNER inspector as per mark up drawing. This line check
must be approved by OWNER inspector before execution blowing.
 If OWNER inspector already approved and blowing activity could be continued,
start the air compressor (refer to the procedures and provisions of VENDOR)
 Open the valve on the main header so that the air is coming out.
 Fill the system with air and check the pressure inside the pipes. It should not
exceed the pressure specification of design pipe. If desired pressure is reached,
open the “quick opening valve” and check the cleanliness of output air. Conduct
this step for several times to get the cleanliness as per acceptance criteria. If the
output air already clean, open venting slowly and release the air into atmosphere.
 Fill the check sheet and test sheet that already prepared before. All check sheets
and test sheets must be approved by OWNER inspector. So, blowing can be
finished.
 Uninstall all temporary equipments after the pipes already decompressed. Make
sure that temporary pressure gauge, blind plate, venting and etc. uninstall
completely.
 Install permanent equipments after temporary equipments uninstalled. Make sure
that permanent equipment is installed and tightened properly.
