1) “The” article
 The article ‘the’ is used:
1) For somebody or something specific.
The English teacher is very mean.

2) For somebody or something already mentioned.

A: There’s a new car in the street.
B: Yes, it’s the car I bought yesterday.

3) For unique things.

The Earth revolves around the sun.
4) With the superlative of adjectives/adverbs.
English is the easiest language to learn.

5) Geographical features (rivers, seas, oceans, canals, mountain ranges,

group of islands and deserts).
The Atlantic Ocean contains a relatively small number of islands.

6) Countries which have a plural noun as their names.

The Philippines became a Spanish colony during the 16th century.
7) Before nationalities referring to the whole nation.
The German are recognized around the world by their punctuality.

8) Before people’s last names when referring to the whole family.

The Obamas are not coming to the party tonight.

9) For hotels, pubs, restaurants, theaters, movie theaters and

newspapers.

The article has two different pronunciations, depending on the sound of
the word that follows it.

1) Pronounced /ði/ when the next word starts with a vowel sound.

2) Pronounced /ðə/ when the next word starts with a consonant sound.
E.g. The man crashed his car into a tree.

 The article ‘the’ is NOT used:
1. With proper nouns (names of people, street, islands, mountains,
cities, countries and continents.

Adam Sandler is my favorite actor. / Rome is a beautiful city in Italy.

2. With the names of days, months, seasons and holidays.

I don’t work on Saturday. / Saint Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in

Ireland.

3. With plural countable nouns or uncountable nouns when we talk

about something in general.

Susan loves dogs. / Water is a very important resource in the world.

4. With abstract nouns.

Poverty is a ue problem nowadays. / Love is the best feeling of all.

5. With names of meals, colors, magazines, sports, games and

languages (when they are not followed by the word language).

6. With certain words such as: school, work, home, bed, church, prison

Additional Information.
Another article in English is the indefinite article “a” / “an” which is
used to talk about singular countable nouns, when the person does
not really know exactly the thing or person we are referring to and
to talk about occupations.
Examples:
1) I have a new car.
2) My dad was an accountant.
3) Police is searching for a 15-year old girl who disappear from home
last night.
