'Seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness, come bosom friend of the maturing sun.' I
hope I've remembered that right! October is such a lovely month when autumn starts
her colourful journey through to Christmas/winter. It is easy to think it is an end, but
for many, especially our youngsters, It is a huge beginning as they set off on the next
phase of their lives, be it university, college or starting their proper working life.
So many changes and not just the changing colours of the leaves: who can resist
kicking up the Autumn leaves? We used to be blessed with a good old Autumn bon-
fire, to clear up all the garden prunings and debris, (alas another of life's little
pleasures gone) another 'ending,' but the ashes were kept to encourage good growth
the following year – new beginnings. Wishing you all an optimistic October.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Dear Friends
Where has the year gone, do you find yourself saying that. This year seems to have
flown by and now we are in October, the season of Autumn, and I have to admit one
of my favourite times of the year, the changing colours of the trees and the cooler
days (sorry I'm not a person who likes the heat of the summer) the ripe fruit picked
and stored or frozen to give a hint of summer during the winter months.
The only drawback is the nights getting darker and the end of the month we change
our clocks again and the darkness comes an hour earlier. Darkness always seems
to invoke a feeling of fear, but Jesus said: “I am the world's Light. No one who
follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”
(John 8 : 12)
We can all shine as lights in our communities no matter where we are on life's
journey. Whether it is helping at the Night Shelter or the Food Bank, offering a lift to
someone who doesn't have a car, or just ringing a neighbour to see if they need
anything. With the darker nights people living on their own can feel more isolated
and often a friendly face can mean so much. It is in the small things that we can do
so much.
Small faith, flickering, wavering faith, sometimes strong – a flame that lightens the
darkness, renews hope, courage, perseverance. But often so weak, burning dimly,
faintly, nearly stubbed out by the tossing and turning of life's storms.
Small skills, our experiences and our gifts something's we can do, abilities and
talents that you've given us, Lord beginning to flourish with gentle nurture. But an
awful lot we can't do jobs that seem overwhelming, the clamouring needs and
demands of each day, fear of failure looming on the horizon.
Small vision, sometimes we do not see that small things make such a difference
lives are transformed, and relationships healed. We need to expand our horizons.
Small faith, small skills, small vision all things we have but everything can be used
for the good of everybody. Autumn is a time to look back and also to celebrate the
harvest of our lives. May we all use the small things we have to shine our lights out
into the world.

Gayton Jubilee Village Hall
I'd like to begin this months article with a massive thank you to everyone that has
donated food or money to the foodbank. What a difference your generosity has
made to some of our struggling families.
Due to family commitments I am away from 12th of October until 25th so there will
be no coffee mornings, foodbank or community lunches during this time. The
lunches will restart on 26th October, with a foodbank on 27th October then the coffee
morning will resume on 31st October.
I have been gifted a lovely brand new toaster for the hall which was very welcome
and will be put to work ASAP
We purchased a new 5ft larder fridge as the other one was too small for our growing
breakfast and community lunches
On my return, I will begin planning a pensioners Xmas dinner so will be asking for
volunteers for help with various aspects of it.
I will also begin planning the Xmas hampers for the families that use the foodbank,
so will be asking for donations ( financial, food, gifts for the kids and practical help)
There is also a Xmas fete and Bingo pencilled in for the first Saturday in December
with a mega raffle to be drawn at the bingo.
If you want to help with any of the above, don't hesitate to contact me via the
Gayton Village Jubilee Hall page or on my number 07447178744 Sandi Rose
Please can someone deliver the 25 copies in Drapers Gardens. Also because of ill
health, we need someone to deliver in Ashwicken. Please respond or we will loose
direct delivery.

We meet each week and have fun doing a variety of activities like navigating a route
without GPS by making our own compasses and using nature to guide us.
The girls enjoyed looking at fashion through the decades and assembled their own
retro outfits. They hosted a Halloween party for the Brownies with themed food,
drink and games. We have guest visitors such as the ambulance service to tell us
about their work.
Once upon a time! When windows was just a square hole in a room and application
was something written on a paper. When keyboard was a piano and mouse just an
animal. When file was an important office material and hard drive just an
uncomfortable road trip, When cut was done with knife and paste with glue. When

fruits -that’s when we had a lot of time for family and friends. anon

Gina's Page: a page of fun things
· 115g unsalted butter, diced and chilled, plus extra for the tin
· 100g sultanas
Method
· STEP 1
Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line a deep 20cm cake tin with
baking parchment.
· STEP 2
Mix the flour and cinnamon together in a large bowl. Add the butter and rub into the
flour using your fingers, until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the light brown
sugar. Beat in the egg followed by 6-8 tbsp of milk – add it gradually until you have a
smooth, thick batter.
· STEP 3
Add the apples and sultanas and mix to combine. Scrape the batter into the prepared
tin and gently level out. Sprinkle over the demerara sugar, if using, and bake for 30-
40 mins or until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.
· STEP 4
Allow to cool in the tin for 15 mins and then carefully turn out onto a wire rack to cool
further. Best served still warm with a little custard.

Memories and Thoughts
His working life was spent as a Probation Officer and he worked in Norfolk
Probation at Kings Lynn, setting up the Community Service, later working in the
Family Courts and the Youth Offending Team. He was an immensely caring person
with huge compassion for those in need and helped so many people. He loved sport
and joined his three sons and families at cricket, hockey, rugby, and football,
whenever he could. He was a committed West Ham supporter, from his roots in
South Essex.
Thank you so much for all for the messages and thoughts from so many people in
our villages. It is immensely touching.
He will be enormously missed. Remember him with a smile on your face and love in
your hearts. Rev'd Sue Martin

“Geology of the Breckland”
Tim Pankhurst is the Regional Conservation Manager at Plantlife International which
is at the heart of a worldwide network that is spearheading the race to save wild
flowers, plants and fungi. We need wild plants and fungi to survive. Unfortunately,
both wild flowers and pollinators are disappearing rapidly.
The Breckland heath and woodland form a unique and richly diverse ecosystem
providing habitats for the notable species of birds and fauna which are special to this
area of East Anglia. Tim's role in applying threatened plant conservation
programmes here in East Anglia is critically dependent on understanding the
Breckland Geology which underpins this outstanding landscape and supports the
intriguing Breckland Flora. Tim's presentation gives us a perfect opportunity to
understand how we might support our environment and what makes Breckland
special.

At the meeting held on the 15th of September, three new councillors
were co-opted which is great news for the Parish Council and Bal,
Andy and Victoria are most welcome.
We would like to thank Jason Ess for his hard work and dedication to
the Parish Council and he will be missed.
The Parish Council would like to thank Sibelco for, once again, filling in the
potholes on the Village Hall car park at no cost. Your support is invaluable.
The fencing around the play area in Leziate is being replaced and work
commences on the 18th of September.
Best regards,
Caroline Boyden Parish Clerk
For and on Behalf of Leziate Parish Council
Bob ran out of petrol and a bee flew in his car window...’Are you out of
petrol?’ said the bee. ‘Yes said Bob.’ ‘Gimme a minute’ said the bee and
flew away.
Minutes later the bee returned with the entire hive of bees, who few into
his petrol tank. Moments later they emerged.’Try it now’ said a
passing bee. Bob tried and the car started. Bob said ‘Wow, what did
you put in the tank?’
Wait for it.......BP

Gayton Church Matters
A new state of the Art Sound System has now been installed in Gayton Church
together with a projector and screen. The Screen is hidden in the Chancel and is
lowered when required for use.
We are about to try and install a recording of Wedding Bells this is work in progress
and by trial and error. We have two options to place speakers in the sound chamber
in the tower and play the recording through them, which is favourite. If this is not
practical, plan B is to have a speaker near the door to project the sound. Should you,
in the near future, hear wedding bells, this will be just a trial. We hope to have them
up and running for a wedding on 11th November.
We have a good number of weddings booked for 2024 if you haven't booked yet and
are thinking of getting married in Gayton Church, please book as soon as possible.
We like one wedding per Saturday this avoids a clash of families over flower
arranging and times.
As we are interregnum I have to locate a vicar from another church to take the
service, this adds to the problem, hoping they haven't a wedding in their own church.
From time to time we get legacies left to the church in wills. Can I ask you make
specific details to what you want the money used for e.g. Church upkeep it is then
ring fenced. If you don't, then money is added to the general account and it may not
be used for the purpose you intended.
Our current Parish Share which we have to pay to the Diocese is £10,700 for this
year. It goes up every year until a point when it's impossible to pay.
If you have any enquires regarding the church, weddings, funerals or baptisms whilst
we are in interregnum please contact me on 01553 636629 or email

Special Meeting of West Acre PC re Dog Attack – August 29th 6pm
@ West Acre Village Hall.
About 50 people attended this special meeting, well chaired by Eoghan Sheils. It
started at 6.10pm due to the late arrival of Alex Birkbank of WA Estate. During this
10 mins, Chairman Sheils reported that although invited, no-one was attending from
Norfolk County Council, so he read out the statement from them, regarding the
keeping of wild animals and Public Right of Ways.
Vanessa Shadbolt then gave her account of the horrific events of the day when both
her dog and husband were attacked by a wild* boar, resulting in Luna, the dog
suffering greatly from her wounds and having to be put down. Her husband was still
suffering from his leg injuries but doing OK. Vanessa stressed that they were walking
on the Public footpath, and that both their dogs were on leads, her husband, with
Luna was about 20yds in front of her, when the boar rushed out of the undergrowth
and started attacking the dog, then her husband when he tried to fend it off. A piglet
appeared and the boar attacked again.
NCC had stated in their missive that as the boar was a second-generation pig, they
are no longer classed as 'dangerous.' (*) Someone from the floor suggested that
these are not 'old native boars, but have been crossed with a Hungarian boar. This
was not addressed.
Alec responded to Vanessa with apologies for the incident and said that the pigs are
managed and are quite tame. This caused a stir amongst the audience! He also said
that they didn't know the boar was pregnant, so how 'managed' are they?
Suggestions were made from a committee member that the Public Right of Way
should be a safe environment for all members of the public and could the ones
crossing the WA Estate be fenced off. This was flatly refused and some members of
the audience questioned why. According to Alex this would be detrimental to the
boars! He also suggested that people should interact with these animals more
readily! A number of people protested that they were now terrified to use that path
especially as new signs had been put up warning of the dangers; it proved that these
signs are illegal anyway as they do not display a phone number in case of
emergency: the WA Estate was accused of outright arrogance on these matters.
Alex also stated that now pregnant sows and litters will be confined away from the
public footpaths and no boars or breeding will take place at WAE until further notice.
He also stated that the public need educating re re-wilding and WAE plan open days
and talks and better information.
In conclusion, it was suggested that the lessons should be learned and that WAE
should draw up a plan with what they have learned and what they are planning as a
way forward to ensure that this does not happen again allowing people to use/ enjoy
the public rights of way, safely. Gina Watling

Grimston Cricket Club
As Autumn sets in and the summer feels like a distant memory, we are
still busy at the cricket ground beginning the off-season work at the
cricket ground which is needed to ensure everything is ready for next
year, which promises to be even bigger than 2023.
First and foremost, our pitch maintenance is now underway - we are forecasting to
host a 300% increase in matches next year due to our continued growth - therefore
we are bringing in a specialist to undertake vital end-of-season repairs to our pitch.
These repairs will involve removing the grass at both ends of the pitch, levelling the
pitch and laying fresh "loam" (a clay rich soil), followed by re-seeding and fertilising.
This ensures the soil structure and root network of the grass is strong and the pitch
continues to be robust, ready to handle to the volume of games we will be playing
next year.
Other jobs we are undertaking are erecting a new picket fence in front of the patio,
this has been kindly supplied by local business Direct Plants, with the patio laid by
Wayne Tuffs Builders - once again we are hugely appreciate of the support of local
businesses. We will also dissemble our site screens and covers to protect them over
the winter.
Other key funding objectives for us are to raise money for new pitch covers, as the
current covers leak, and raising money to resurface the thatched roof on the pavilion
- both are key objectives for us but are considerable undertakings.
In the meantime, we will be offering indoor coaching sessions for our youth
cricketers over the winter as we anticipate the return of the cricket season next year!

Gayton Football Club
September has seen both the firsts and reserves be on the end of
losses but performances have been very encouraging with all
connected to the club pleased with the progress the club has been
making.
October looks set for another busy month for the club with games coming thick and
fast, the firsts have Stalham Town in the second round of the Junior Cup, with the
final at Carrow Road it's a competition that is difficult to win but as seen recently in
our local rivals Castle Acre it's not impossible.
The youthful A team have won their first game against Docking reserves in the
Norfolk Primary Cup, with the A's facing Watlington Development in the next round.
The youthful A side have seen their fortune also mixed in league action but the
experiences of men's football at such young ages is vital to their development.
Septembers 100 club winner was Joe Woodhouse, Joe has kindly donated his
winnings back into the club. Joe has been playing for the club the last 4/5 years
and is a real testament of what we are as a club but more importantly a top human
being.
We hope to have more to share in November issue with you all but it has been a
hectic couple of weeks for myself as my first born, Myla has
arrived recently so my role as Reserves manager has had to take
a step back for a short while. Mother and baby are both doing
great and I'm hopeful Myla will be able to see many wins down at
LKR soon!
As always thank you for all on going support and we hope to see
you all still down at the ground.
