Module 17.

2
Adding Polynomial Expressions

How do you add polynomials?

P. 817
P. 819

1) Write the 1st polynomial in standard form

2) Underneath that, write the 2nd polynomial,
also in standard form
3) Line up the like terms

4) Add the coefficients of each term

5) Simplify if necessary.
P. 819

1) Write the 1st polynomial in standard form

2) Underneath that, write the 2nd polynomial,
also in standard form
3) Line up the like terms (leave a space if none)

4) Add the coefficients of each term

5) Simplify if necessary.
P. 819
P. 820

1) Regroup into like

terms and surround
with parenthesis.

2) Combine like
terms by adding
their coefficients,
simplifying if
necessary.

AVOID COMMON ERRORS
The best way to avoid errors when adding complicated
polynomials is to rewrite them with like terms grouped before
combining them. Students who try to combine terms in their
heads often get confused or make arithmetic mistakes.
P. 821

You can model many situations using polynomials. Sometimes you can model a new situation
by adding two or more polynomials.

A box company owns two factories in different parts of the country.
