Inside IPG1000 Rack

► Above photo shows KAREL IPG1000 rack with one CPU card in the middle (C1
slot) and different cards installed. 19” (3U) chassis

► All cards have RJ45 type standard connectors. For example 0/16C analog
extension card has 4 no.s of RJ45 connectors, each connector serves to 4 pairs
(4 analog extensions of the card)

► Card cables leave the cabinet through the gap between front cover and bottom
of the rack
Stacking of IPG1000 Racks (Tower)
KAREL IPG1000 TOWER OF 3 RACKS

AUX. RACK This rack has CPU1000-AR

AUX. RACK This rack has CPU1000-AR

MAIN RACK This rack has CPU1000-MR

► Up to 3 no.s of IPG1000 racks can be stacked without requiring any kind of networking. This is
called as a “TOWER”.
► Connection between racks are provided with flat cables
► First rack is called as MAIN RACK. Second and third racks are called as AUXILIARY RACKS. Main and
Aux racks are identical. Type of CPU card inserted to the rack defines the rack type:
■ Main rack has CPU1000-MR (CPU1000 CPU Card for Main Rack)
■ Auxiliary rack has CPU1000-AR (CPU1000 CPU Card for Aux. Rack)
■ Only CPU1000-MR is the actual CPU card of the tower that supports HSB redundancy.
► Each rack has 14 slots for expansion cards. 3 racks house 3 x 14 slots = 42 slots. If we fill all 42 slots
with 0/16 extension cards, a tower will serve up to 42x16 = 672 extensions
Stacking of IPG1000 Racks (Tower)

AUX. RACK DIP Switch position is 2 OFF, 1-3-4 ON for 3nd Rack (Aux Rack)

AUX. RACK DIP Switch position is 1 OFF, 2-3-4 ON for 2nd Rack (Aux Rack)

MAIN RACK DIP Switch position is all ON for Main Rack

Back side view of a 3-rack IPG1000 tower with flat cable connections

► DIP Switch at the back side of backplane (mother board) in the rack defines the rack number.
■ Lowest rack, which is a main rack shall be the first rack.
■ Middle rack, which is an auxiliary rack shall be the second rack.
■ Third rack, which is also an auxiliary rack shall be the third rack.

► Remember: Up to 3 no.s of IPG1000 racks can be stacked without requiring any kind of networking.
This is called as a “TOWER”.
IP Ports & Capacity of Tower

► Only CPU1000-MR shall be connected to the ETH network

► In addition to the analog and digital (TDM) ports in a tower, CPU1000-MR card
has capability to run:
■ 1000 IP extensions (SIP or proprietary)
■ 200 IP trunks

► If we fill all 42 slots of a 3-rack tower with extension cards, total maximum
capacity of a tower becomes:
■ 42 x 16 = 672 analog extensions
AND
■ 1000 IP extensions (SIP or proprietary)
AND
■ 200 SIP trunks
Summary (IPG1000 Rack & Tower)

► Two types of IPG 1000 rack:

■ Main Rack with CPU1000-MR (has processor, optional redundancy)
■ Aux. Rack with CPU1000-AR

► Tower is a stand-alone system without requiring any

networking.
■ A tower should have at least 1 Main Rack
■ A tower may have maximum 3 Racks (1 Main + 2 Aux.)

► Capacity of a tower: 672 analog / digital ext.s, 1000 IP ext.s,

200 IP trunks. If we add E1 cards, number of analog digital
ext.s will be less due to slots occupied by E1 cards
Connection of Towers without Server
TOWER 1 TOWER 2 TOWER 3 TOWER 4

IP NETWORK

► Maximum 4 towers of 3 IPG1000 racks (4 x 42 slots = 168 slots) can be connected through IP
network.
► Towers can be distributed to different locations. Full feature transparency between
locations/towers (IPCC Protocol).
► CPU1000-MR in first rack of Tower 1 acts as the main CPU of all 4 towers. This CPU can be
duplicated for HSB redundancy. All racks function as a single pbx.
► If all slots are filled with 0/16 extension cards, max. TDM extension capacity becomes 168
slots x 16 = 2688. IP port capacity for the total system is 1000 IP extensions, 200 IP trunks.
► TDM speech communication between locations are established with MGW32 cards. Each
card provides 32 channels.
► In case of a failure of communication between towers, tower that loses connection with 1 st
tower automatically switches to “self-survival mode” and continues serving to local
extensions or trunks.
Connection of Towers with Server
TOWER 1 TOWER 2 TOWER 3 TOWER #N
SERVER 2
SERVER 1
(OPTIONAL)

IP NETWORK

► With the presence of server, N number of towers can be connected through IP

network. (Max. 128 racks)
► Maximum capacity of the IPG system with server and multiple towers: 32,000 IP and
32,000 TDM, total 64,000 ports.
► Towers can be distributed to different locations. Full feature transparency between
locations/towers (IPCC Protocol).
► Server 1 acts as the main processor of complete system. This server can be duplicated
for HSB redundancy. All racks function as a single pbx.
► TDM speech communication between locations are established with MGW32 cards.
Each card provides 32 channels.
► In case of a failure of communication between towers, tower that loses connection
with server, automatically switches to “self-survival mode” and continues serving to
local extensions or trunks.

Scalability

► Karel IP-DECT system is highly scalable.

► A simple installation could consist of a single base station with

some handsets. This can be grown in two ways:
1. User Capacity - add more base stations (and handsets) within existing
coverage area to increase capacity for simultaneous calls.*

2. Geographically – add more base stations to new coverage area(s) to

increase coverage area.

 1000 base stations can be connected to single PBX and 10000 handsets can be
registered to base stations in same LAN.

*Each base station can handle up to 8 simultaneous calls.

How does EPABX interact with Nurse Call System?

1. Alarm triggering from phones

2. Unattended inquiries on NCS trigger call or IM to

phones/DECT handsets
Please see the next two slides for details...
Nurse Calling System
1. Alarm Triggering from Phones

TYPICAL ALARMS
WHITE: In case of harassment, attack, violence
BLUE: Urgent health issue (heart and respiratory arrest)
PINK: Security (Baby or Child kidnapping)
RED: In the event of fire, explosion, disaster
ORANGE: In case of chemical or harmful substance leak
CONSULTATION: Health support from other units
FACILITIES: Request for immediate cleaning or maintenance

► Each alarm has different number of dialing

► Only authorized staff can make alarm calls

(Specific extensions, optional password protection)

► IVR picks up alarm calls, asks to activate/deactivate an alarm

► EPABX transmits the alarm to Nurse Call System with location

information (Floor, room nr., DECT handset location, etc.)
Nurse Calling System
2. Unattended Inquiries on Nurse Call System

► Unattended inquiries on NCS from patient rooms trigger calls

or Instant Messages to phones/DECT handsets

■ Attended Inquiry: Nurse call system button pressed in a

patient room, nurse should confirm his/her response to
the inquiry from desk by pressing related button on
nurse call system within a predefined duration

■ Unattended Inquiry: Nurse is absent or unavailable.

He/She has not responded to inquiry in a predefined
duration. NCS sends message to EPABX about unattended
inquiry with room/location information. EPABX sends IM
to predefinded DECT handsets about inquiry with
location information or initiates alarm calls
