RATIOS AND RATES In the last part of Exercise #1 we calculated a unit rate or how much of one quantity we have if
N-GEN MATH® 7 we have one unit of another quantity (per units). Unit rates can always be found by dividing the
two quantities involved in any ratio. It is helpful to first set the ratio up as a fraction.
We will work with ratios and the closely related idea of rates throughout this course. They are
one of the most important ideas in practical math. Let’s review the concept of a ratio. Exercise #3: Beth is dividing up 18 gallons of water evenly between 8 buckets.

Exercise #1: At a birthday party the ratio of pizza slices to kids is 3 to 2 or 3:2. (a) Write the ratio of gallons to buckets as a (b) Convert the fraction in (a) to a decimal

Exercise #4: In each of the following situations, set up the rate as a fraction, showing units. Then
Equivalent ratios can be thought of most easily by using fractions to represent the ratios.
use division to find the unit rate. Use proper per units in your final answer.
Exercise #2: The ratio of left-handed students to right-handed students in a class is 2 to 7. There (a) Caroline runs 258 feet in 12 seconds. What (b) Aisha drove 118 miles and used up 8

Exercise #5: Michelle can walk up 21 flights of stairs in 7 minutes. At this rate, how many flights
of stairs can she walk up in 10 minutes? Explain how you found your answer.
(c) What fraction of the total students is left-handed in both (a) and (b)? Show how you arrived
at your answers and write in simplest form.
