PREFACE

Alhamdulillah, praise and gratitude I pray to Allah SWT. for the abundance of His Grace and
Grace so that I can complete my Journal Review assignment with a journal entitled,
"INTEGRATED SUSTAINABLE BUILDING IN THE TROPIC: CASE STUDY
"FABRICA DE CULTURA", BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA". I hope this assignment can
increase knowledge and for readers about sustainable tropical architecture. Likewise, for the
abundance of health and opportunities that Allah SWT has given me so that I can compile
this journal review assignment through a source, namely the internet.

On this occasion, I would also like to thank the Advisory Lecturer who has provided direction
in making this Journal Review assignment. Therefore, in this assignment that I have prepared,
I apologize if there are typos or discrepancies in the material that must be discussed in this
journal review.

INTRODUCTION

I chose the journal “Integrated SUSTAINABLE BUILDING DESIGN IN TROPICH: CASE

STUDY “FABRICA DE CULTURA”, BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA” because this
journal presents case studies of integrated sustainable building design in the tropics. In an
interdisciplinary approach, they evaluated a series of strategies to improve the expected
performance of a building prototype in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. they create
reasonable architectural choices, and use building performance simulation techniques to
evaluate the feasibility of energy and water efficiency strategies.

In this Journal they present a unified methodology for the analysis and evaluation of energy
and water efficiency strategies for different architectural options. They also presented their
results in the form of strategic bundles/concepts followed by discussions and conclusions.
Judging from the way the material is presented and the way it is presented, this journal fits
perfectly with the topics I will be observing, namely tropical architecture, energy-efficient
architecture and ecological architecture.

A. Background of the Journal and Purpose of the Journal

1. Journal Background
According to J. A. Fonseca, P. Jayathissa & A. Schlueter Sustainable social,
economic and environmental changes have driven the renewal and expansion of the
built environment with a focus on energy and water. . In tropical Latin American
countries, high utility prices combined with unreliable supply, represent a clear
opportunity to drive energy and water efficiency strategies in buildings [2]. In this
context, the promotion of integrated sustainable building design is the key to holistic
planning for maximum conservation of resources and improvement of living
standards in buildings.

2. The Purpose of Journaling

J. A. Fonseca, P. Jayathissa & A. Schlueter explained that an integrated approach in
the field of sustainable building design aims to find common ground between
architecture and sustainable building technology. This type of approach facilitates the
translation of energy efficiency strategies into solutions that are closely related to the
needs of the occupants and the architecture of the building. In tropical Colombia, this
integrated approach to understanding is still in its premature stage as the need for
sustainable buildings on the Colombian coast is a relatively new topic.

i
3. Methodology
The approach that J. A. Fonseca, P. Jayathissa & A. Schlueter use for integrated
sustainable building design involves assessing technical, environmental, and
economic strategies in an interdisciplinary setting. The assessment was carried out
iteratively through a series of workshops with local stakeholders, architects,
structural engineers and building systems.

4. Journal Results and Discussion

From the previous analysis, J. A. Fonseca, P. Jayathissa & A. Schlueter outlined four
strategic bundles for efficient use of resources in the Fabrica de Cultura building.
Each bundle has a two-fold sustainable approach: The first two, aim to reduce the
environmental impact of buildings with energy conservation strategies. The
remainder aims to increase the resilience of buildings to climate change through the
option of decentralizing energy and water production. They present a breakdown of
additional costs and estimated savings per strategic bundle. For this, we assume the
feed-in tariff from PV is equal to two-thirds of the local electricity price (ie 200
COP/kWh [$0.10/kWh]) in the worst case scenario. With this limitless strategy,
Fabrica de Cultura was able to achieve up to 93% net energy savings and associated
emissions, 86% water savings and 144.5 million COP economic savings (USD
76,891.34). The additional investment cost of the technology will reach COP 757
million or about 8% of the building construction cost. In Table 1 they present a
breakdown of additional costs and estimated savings per strategic bundle. For this,
we assume the feed-in tariff from PV is equal to two-thirds of the local electricity
price (ie 200 COP/kWh [$0.10/kWh]) in the worst case scenario. With this limitless
strategy, Fabrica de Cultura was able to achieve up to 93% net energy savings and
associated emissions, 86% water savings and 144.5 million COP economic savings
(USD 76,891.34). The additional investment cost of the technology will reach COP
757 million or about 8% of the building construction cost.

Fabrica de Cultura” has the potential to consume almost 50% less energy compared
to local schools while still achieving a much higher standard of comfort. Including
on-site generation, the net energy savings are 93%. Their concept is integrated into
the core architecture of external services and a circular walkway, which connects the
auditorium and school with the structure that stands to the north.

CLOSE

Conclusion
They use an integrated approach to sustainable building design that facilitates the exploitation
of synergies between the architecture of the building and its infrastructure. The constant
feedback to the designers and the involvement of local stakeholders in the process allowed us
to find the optimal solution in a relatively short time. This suite of solutions ensures
maximum sustainability and contributes to the mitigation and adaptation of urban areas to
climate change. On a broader scale, these strategies could in principle be applied in similar
cases throughout the tropics of Latin American countries.

Suggestion
This paper acknowledges a number of shortcomings, related to the lack of in-depth discussion
in several units of analysis. The shortcomings of this study can be used as ideas for further
research. Based on the results of the study, the researcher will make recommendations on the
analysis of the results. Here are some suggestions from researchers related to this research.
