Laying a new line Reasons for laying a new railway line Strategic Consideration: Join two points for strategic purposes so that army can be transferred from one points to other Linking of trade centers Connecting port with the interior of the country Shortening existing route Laying of a branch line Under developed area Factor Influencing the proposed route Cost: Should be minimum (Maintenance cost, Renewal expenditure & Working expenses) Safety: New route should be laid as to have minimum chances of train accidents Speed: Reasonable speed of trains Prof. Mahmood Omar Imam Surveys Traffic Survey Reconnaissance Survey Preliminary Survey Final Location Traffic Survey: Why? How? Visit all trade centers Consult local bodies, state governments, important, organizations • Info collected: human resources, agricultural and mineral resources, patterns of trade and commerce, industries located, prospective tourist traffic, existing transport facilities, important government and private offices
Prof. Mahmood Omar Imam
Surveys Reconnaissance Survey (Engineering): Why? How? Visit state governments, Geological survey department • Info collected: Physical features of the country, surface formation of the ground and nature of soil & its classification, rivers which are likely to cross the proposed railway line and positions of hills & lakes, availability of materials & labour for used during construction Preliminary Survey: Objective: Which route will be the most economical among the others Importance: Decides the final route & recommends only one particular routes in preference to other alternative routes Location Survey: Objective: carry out the detailed survey along the route Importance: Center-line of the actual track to be laid Prof. Mahmood Omar Imam
