ALUMINIUM JACKETING

Rolling Aluminum Industry LLC (RAI) Aluminium Jacketing is

a metal jacket with a factory applied heat laminated moisture
barrier (Polysurlyn/Polykraft) on the inner side of the
aluminium cladding. RAI aluminum jacketing is manufactured
using specification aluminium alloys that conform to ASTM B-
209M; specific alloys are available upon request. RAI
aluminium jacketing is the premier material for all mechanical
insulation systems including pipes, vessels and various
equipment’s.

The properties of these aluminium alloys provide the required strength to resist in-service abuse, and can be
easily fabricated and installed. Aluminium has an excellent resistance to corrosion which reduces cost through
long service, without maintenance or painting. RAI aluminium jacketing is available in smooth, Stucco
Embossed and 3/16” Corrugated (Cross-Crimped) finishes. For larger surfaces, Box-Rib and Deep
Corrugated sheets are also available.

POLYSURLYN MOISTURE BARRIER

The moisture barrier (Polysurlyn, PSMB) isolates the layers of insulation from the jacketing material, avoiding
moisture penetration and metal-to-metal contact to prevent crevice, pitting and galvanic corrosion. It also
protects the insulation and underlying pipe/vessel from any direct physical damage, UV exposure, corrosive
atmospheres and water.

Polysurlyn is a 3 layered film comprising of 1 mil High Density

Polyethylene, I mil Surlyn film and 1 mil Low Density Polyethylene.
The film is laminated to the interior side of RAI aluminium
jacketing employing heat and pressure. This moisture barrier is a
significant improvement upon the original polyethylene + Kraft
paper product as it is three times as thick and eliminates the
pinholes that occur in the traditional material.

POLYKRAFT MOISTURE BARRIER

The moisture barrier (Polykraft, PKMB) consists of one layer of 1 mil

polyethylene film with a protective layer of 40-pound virgin kraft
paper. The moisture barrier is factory applied by attaching the
jacketing by continuous lamination to the full width of the metal.

SURFACE FINISHES

The various surface finishes available with RAI – Aluminium Jacketing, viz. Smooth, Stucco Embossed and
3/16” Corrugated, all have applications where it is recommended. Also, all of these can be supplied with a
coated exterior.

Smooth (Plain) Mill Finish

The most popular finish and commonly used by many Consultants/Specifiers who prefer
the clean look of this finish. Smooth finish repels rain water the best, if maintained
appropriately. However, this smooth/plain surface readily shows damages such as from
hail or other physical abuse. This surface also shows dirt more than the other finishes due
to its smoothness. This finish is also highly reflective of sunlight and when located near
roadways, some Specifiers see this as a possible concern.

Stucco Embossed Finish

Stucco like surface texture hides small imperfections and scratches caused by physical
damage during or after installation. This finish also reduces reflectivity while still looking
very professional. Stucco Embossed finish provides a small increase to the rigidity and
strength to the aluminium jacketing.

3/16” Corrugated (Cross-Crimped) Finish

Cross-crimped finish consists of parallel grooves or crimps running along in the length
direction of the pipe being insulated. This finish in particular helps in reducing reflectivity
of sunlight. Added advantage to this jacketing is the ability to expand and contract to
adapt to insulation movement caused by the pipe or ambient temperature changes.

RECOMMENDED USES

Flat and 3/16” corrugated jacketing is recommended for

insulated piping, tanks, and vessels less than 12 feet in diameter.
Deep corrugated sheets are recommended for diameters
greater than 12 feet.

a. Pipeline Applications: Thicknesses of 0.4mm, 0.5mm

and 0.6mm can be used and this is determined by the
size of the pipe and by the type of insulation to be
used. Greater thicknesses are used for larger pipe
and for softer insulation systems. The jacketing is
available with either a smooth or stucco embossed
finish in a flat or 3/16" corrugation form for pipelines
applications.

b. Small Equipment and Vessels: Thicknesses of 0.6mm and 0.8mm can be used and this is determined
by the type of insulation to be used (softer insulation systems requires greater thickness of
aluminium). The jacketing is available with either a smooth or stucco embossed finish in a 1 ¼" or
2 ½” corrugation form for small equipment and vessels.

c. Large Equipment and Tanks: Thicknesses of 0.8mm, 1.0mm and 1.2mm can be used and this is
determined by the type of insulation to be used (softer insulation systems requires greater thickness
of aluminium). The jacketing is available with either a smooth or stucco embossed finish in a 1 ¼"
or 2 ½” corrugation form for these large equipment and tanks.
