Additional Requirements for Metal Components-Special Materials 590589-108 Part 2
1 Scope
This part of the standard applies for special steel materials used by Brose. Since this steels are a question
of specific developments of the steel suppliers (e.g. modified chemical analysis, special strength etc.),
mostly also with trade-/ brand names, this steels cannot be found in public standards. In this standard are
the chemical requirements as well as the mechanical properties of the particular special steels combined
and specified on basis of the data sheets of the manufactures.
Further information relating to dynamic properties, endurance strength values, forming behavior,
temperature dependence and weldability, plus a comparison of the strength relative to standard steels, can
be found in the appropriate data sheets in SAP/”Docfinder” or obtained from the steel manufacturer in
question.

ETG 25 is an extremely rigid special steel with a ferritic-pearlitic structure, similar to property class 8.8
(DIN EN ISO 898-1), but without thermal treatment:
- Good cold formability
- Good cutting property/machinability
- Conditionally weldable according to BN 588953 (MAG welding); not suitable for laser welding
- High wear- and fatigue resistance

This steel is killed with aluminum or agents with similar effect. The analysis corresponds to the material
SAE 1527 (SAE J 403), similar to material 28Mn6 (DIN EN 10083-2, material number 1.1170).
Relating to strength (yield- and tensile strength) the grade 1045 class B (ASTM A311) is an American
alternative material. However the analysis of 1045 class B is not comparable with ETG 25, SAE 1527
respectively 28Mn6.

ETG 88 and ETG 100 are steel grades distinguished by high strength even in the delivered state. Both steel
grades have a high endurance strength, high wear resistance and outstanding machining properties.
ETG steels are not qualified for screws with wear on the screw head!
ETG do not correspond to strength class 8.8 / 10.9 according to DIN EN ISO 898-1!

ESP 65 was developed as special case hardening steel for machining properties. Concerning the
machinability the ESP 65 outplays the materials 16MnCr5 and 16MnCrS5 clearly. Uniform material
properties allow very narrow tolerances already by turning and lead to a uniform warping behaviour by
hardening.
Weldability: Limited weldable only, e.g. not suitable for electron beam welding.
Application: Parts requiring intensive machining such as toothed wheels, worm gears, gear components,
shafts.

These steels have outstanding machining properties. They permit high cutting speeds, longer tool life and
higher surface quality.
To improve the machinability (longer tool life, better workpiece surface), the element Bi (bismuth) is added
as an alloy. However, elements such as Te, Bi etc. may only be added by the manufacturer for improving
the machinability, if this has been agreed at the time of enquiry and order.

So-called MIM parts (MIM = Metal Injection Molding) are manufactured from these materials.
Parts molded using the MIM process are characterized by a high level of mechanical accuracy and high
surface quality and are particularly well suited for complex geometries.
The MIM process is suitable for the production of small, complex components with high strength
requirements.
Wall thickness
To avoid distortions, MIM parts should not be thicker than 5 mm.
Constant wall thickness
Thickness variations within a part can cause distortion or twisting.
Avoidance of sharp corners and edges
Sharp corners and edges can cause sunk spots.
Avoidance of sharp transitions between areas of different thickness
Flat on one side
If possible, the part should be given a flat contact surface on one side. This improves the injection
process.
Draft angle
For better demolding the parts should have suitable draft angles.

The PT-strip steels are a matter of a special material for producing extreme precise flat- and moulded
springs as well as complexe forming parts in spite of high strength. Such parts are particularly suitable for
statically stresses, such as guide pressure plates or fastening elements.
Mechanical properties in the longitudinal direction and chemical analysis shall be confirmed by an
inspection certificate 3.1 in accordance with DIN EN 10204 (or another appropriate standard).
On the inspection certificate must be specified all measured characteristic values (incl. place of sampling).

In a multistage process consisting of cold-rolling, heat treatment and cold-rolling again a bainitic
microstructure is adjusted by a definitely temperature of the metal bath. This way of heat treatment is also
mentioned in the DIN EN 10132-4. But there the mechanical properties and hardness requirements of the
spring steels are quoted for the martensitic hardened delivery condition (+QT).
Magsimal-59 is a diecasting alloy with excellent mechanical properties for safety components that are
subject to continuous vibrations.

Be content for reduction of oxidation.
The chemical designation is AlMg5Si2Mn.
Table 33: Mechanical properties in cast condition (F) as a function of the wall thickness of the cast parts
The designer must always remember that the mechanical properties are dependent on the wall thickness of
the cast parts. These values are dissipated through the cast part itself with the result that the properties
are better in the cut area than in the distant, opposite cast area.
It is very difficult to extract suitable sample rods from diecast parts and the associated position in the cast
part. The dimensions and the required properties must always be agreed on between the foundry and the
designer.

ECOBRASS is a lead-free special brass which is outstandingly suited for further processing by means of

In spite of a reduced carbon content, already in the delivery condition the HSX- steels are characterised by
high strength and concurrent good machinability. Depending on the requirement the carbon content nearly
can be reduced completely, consequently the danger for cracking by thin walled components, for example,
can explicit reduced.
Based on the above mentioned advantages the HSX- steels definitely describe a commercial alternative
concerning the standard steels for quenching and tempering.
