Prompt #1: In Module 1, you watched "Invictus," a clip from the movie "Gandhi," and a

60 Minute Segment on Mindfulness. The idea was to have you look at attitude and a
mental model about conflict, review the attitudes of two powerful leaders, and
consider your own approach to conflict. Did this Module help set a foundation upon
which to develop the rest of the course? What worked and didn't work?
This was probably my first time watching a movie for a college course assignment, and
I really enjoyed Invictus. It was truly a moving movie and touched my heart. I believe this
first module was curated perfectly and set the tone for the course. I found it to be
meaningful, but also light-hearted through the use of media to help connect with our
learning.
Prompt #2: In Module 2, you were introduced to the martial art, Aikido. The purpose
of this module was to use a martial art that deals with "physical conflict" in a different
way, a way that provided a metaphor for how to deal with conflict in the workplace.
What did you take away from this Module? Did you see a connection between the
principles of Aikido and the principles of dealing professionally with workplace
conflict?
When I registered for this course, I didn’t understand how or why it was related to
Aikido. The demonstration video and activity made it clear how one should approach a
conflict by greeting it using the energy given to you and directing it elsewhere. Module 2
is probably the one I would take away the most. It taught me the importance of being
centered in a situation before reacting.
Prompt #3: In Module 3, you were introduced to the first conflict transformation skill,
"Spitting Out the Hook." Did you learn the skill? Will it help you deal with conflict?
Was this quiz (and were the quizzes} fair, too hard, or too easy? Did the quizzes help
you gain more from the text?
I was able to learn the Spitting out the hook skill after reading and following the video.
I’m much of a visual learner, and the videos helped a lot. I found the quizzes to be fair as
it related to our coursework. The quizzes helped me reinforce what I learned from our
reading and coursework.
Prompt #4: In Module 4, you were introduced to the second conflict transformation
skill, "H.E.A.R." Did you learn the skill? Will it help you deal with conflict? Some of
you already use an active listening skill; was learning H.E.A.R. too redundant or was it
valuable to review?
I was also able to learn the HEAR skill. I’ve always been told I was a good listener, but
after learning the HEAR skill, I found that there was more I could do than just listen.
Engaging and learning how to respond would be a good way to clear up any conflict
from arising again. I don’t think it was redundant, and learning how to listen actively is
important.
Prompt #5: In Module 5, you were introduced to the third conflict transformation skill,
"BURN CLEAN." Did you learn the skill? Will it help you deal with conflict? Will it help
you express your "wants" without throwing out hooks?
I was also able to learn BURN CLEAN. I found that it was an easy clear-cut process to
express your wants to another party. I do think BURN CLEAN goes well with throwing
out hooks, as you’re not letting yourself be hooked and being able to communicate what
you desire.
Prompt #6: In Module 6, you were introduced to the fourth conflict transformation
skill, "SAY YES." Did you learn the steps in this skill? Will you be able to use it to help
you transform conflict? How confident do you feel about using the SAY YES Model?
For this last module, I could use the SAY YES skill, but only because I’ve had practice
being a mediator with my friends. I don’t know how well I would be able to use this skill
in a professional setting since I tend to avoid getting involved with conflict.
Prompt #7: Is there something you wish you had learned or some topic we needed to
spend more or less time on? Add any final thoughts you think would be helpful in
improving this course. Overall, was the workload fair and manageable, light or too
much?
I found the course to be enjoyable and would recommend it to others. I think the
workload was fair and manageable as someone working part-time 25-26 hours a week
on top of my other courses. I don’t think there is anything else I would suggest to add,
but maybe more movies for fun. After we had the Invictus movie I was slightly hoping I
would be able to watch more movies in this class.
