BUSINESS STUDIES: ADVANCED LEVEL

EXAMINATION ANSWERING TECHNIQUES

PAPER 2 ESSAYS WRITING ( SECTION B: 75 MARKS)


_ Anessay is a debate where candidates are
supposed to give an argument, analysis, evaluation,
application and a good conclusion.
_ Candidates should choose the simplest question.
_ candidates should read the question carefully
before attempt to answer any question.
_ candidates may write essay plan, brief outline of
what they are going to write.
_ if you are a Zimbabwean, the use of examples
must be related to the Zimbabwean situation, this
shows part of application.
_ candidates are expected to spend 35-45 minutes
on each question.

INTRODUCTION

_ should be short/brief/ and precise._ capture the


attention of the reader.
_ should be interesting and shows creativity.
_ highlight major issues to be discussed and show
your line of thinking.
_ define key terms.
_ your introduction should impress the
marker/examiner.

BODY :PARAGRAPHS

_ for each paragragh the first statement should be a


major point.
_ candidates should show the the following skills in
every parapragh

1)EVALUATION

_ show the significance of your point or idea.


_ arguing, discussing, and debating issues to reach an
appropriate logical decision
_ need a lot of convincing- evidence that supports your
idea.
_ show you have done research and have use several
sources, textbooks, newspapers, internet etc

2) ANALYSIS
_ explaining trends in data e.g increase or decrease of
variable such as sales.
_ show the likely causes of that , examine the
implications of suggested idea or strategy e.g reduce
price.
_ show cause and effect.

3) APPLICATION

_ explain and give practical examples.


_ the use of examples must be done especially the
Zimbabwean situation.
_ apply theories in your essay e.g -----as this was
propounded by Elton Mayo that team working increases
worker motivation.

CONCLUSION
_ weigh and then judge points you have already
examined
_ which problem is the worst and why?
_ what should be done to the worst problem.
_ give a recommendation.
NB: tie up all major points and judge in line with the
discussion.

70 MARKS)

_ A level business studies paper 1 test on understanding


of the subject content.
_ therefore answers are expected to be short but enough
to be understood by the examiner.

_ should be answered in context


_ do not define unasked terms
_ do not copy the question

DISTINGUISH

_ if 2 marks are allocated, give the definitions


_ if more than 2 marks are allocated, give other matched
differences

DESCRIBE

_ a full sense is expected but not explaining

DEFINE

_ calls for full definition of the term which must be


accurate.
_ a proper definition usually earns 2 marks and any
additional marks are earned through giving any correct
information e.g features, advantages and examples.

EXPLAIN

_ requires route and development


_ show significance or contribution towards business
success
_ give details about a thing so that it can be understood
4 marks require 2 well developed points
STATE, LIST, NAME, IDENTIFY, GIVE

_ this require mere listing or mere writing

EVALUATE, DISCUSS, COMMENT, TO WHAT


EXTENT, HOW FAR DO YOU AGREE?, ANALYSE

_ all these require two sided answer with explanations or


shorter descriptions. Both negative and positive effects.
