MEASUREMENT AND
INTERNATIONAL
SYSTEM OF UNITS(SI)
WHY IS THE INTERNATIONAL
SYSTEM OF UNITS IMPORTANT?
Measurement is global so that it would be understood at anywhere in the world.
Measurement needs to be standardized to measure quantities accurately.

The importance of measurements:

Accuracy- to give correct interpretation of the results

Standardization- meaning that there must be a standard unit of measurement to
ensure that we measure quantities accurately
Unreliability of human senses. eg.) pinch of salt or touching water to feel how
hot/cold it is.
IDENTIFICATION OF INTERANTIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS
SYMBOL AND ITS CONVERSION
Volume – cubic centimetre
(cm³); litre (l); millilitre (ml)
Length- metre(m); kilometre (km); 1cm³ = 1ml
centimetre(cm); millimetre(mm) 1L= 1000ml
1m=0.001km 1L= 1000 cm³
1m=100cm
1m=1000mm Time – seconds (s); minutes
1cm=10mm (min); hours (hr)
60 s = 1 minute
Mass – grams (g); kilograms (kg) 60 minutes= 1 hr

1g=0.001kg
Temperature – degree Celsius
1kg= 1000g
(ºC) and degree Kelvin (ºK)
0ºC= 273ºK
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
The primary reason for converting numbers into scientific notation is to make
calculations with unusually large or small numbers less cumbersome.

Examples:
-4
1.) 0.00049 can be written as 4.9 x 10
5.5 (coefficient) x
6
2.) 2300000 can be written as 2.3 x 10 10 (base) ⁶
0 (exponent)
3.) 9101 is written as 9101 x 10

Note: Anything to the power of 0 is equal to 1.

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
Steps:
1.) Find the original location of the decimal point
2.) Move the decimal point to the left or right to arrange
ONLY ONE digit(between 1-9) to the left of the decimal point.
3.) Count how many times you moved the decimal point to
achieve step (2). We can determine the exponent by
counting how many times you moved the decimal. If you
moved the decimal to the left, the exponent will be negative.
If you moved the decimal to the right, the exponent will be
positive. Remember to include the x10
4.) Present your scientific notation

MULTIPLES AND SUBMULTIPLES
OF UNITS USING PREFIXES

Multiples are factors used to create larger forms whereas

submultiples are factors used to create smaller forms of the SI
units. For example, a centimetre is a submultiple and kilometre is
a multiple of a metre.

radiation that can and can causes
cause damage to the damage to health if
human body in contact with it.
COMMOM SAFETY SYMBOLS
Explosive-an Irritating/Harmful
exploding bomb - cause discomfort
and reddening,
irritation, or
blistering of the
skin.
Oxidizing- could
result in a fire, an
explosion or could
increase the
intensity of a fire
