Auxiliary verbs (is/has/have/are/do/does/did/can, etc.) to AVOID REPETITION.


Present Simple: do / does / is / am / are Past Simple: did / was / were
Present Perfect: have / has
Example:

1. A: Did you guys join the meeting yesterday? B: I joined the meeting, but he didn’t join the meeting.
TO AVOID REPETITION: B: I did , but he didn’t.

2. Who likes tomatoes on pizza? B: I like tomatoes on pizza.


TO AVOID REPETITION: B: I do.

3. Are you going out later? B: They’re not going, but I am going.
TO AVOID REPETITION: B: They’re not , but I am.

4. I never get up early on Sundays, but she gets up early on Sundays.


TO AVOID REPETITION: I never get up early on Sundays, but she does.

Now it’s your turn. Use auxiliaries to replace the underlined repeated sentences / questions.

1. A: Waldo had a problem uploading his audio file. B: He didn’t have a problem uploading his audio file .
A: Yes, he had a problem. B: Do you wanna bet that he didn’t have a problem uploading his audio file?
Waldo, you had trouble uploading your last audio file to Google Classroom, didn’t you? Waldo: No, I didn’t
have a problem uploading my audio file. I think I Melany had a problem uploading her audio file.

2. A: Do you have a friend who studies there? B: I don’t have a friend who studies there but I think
Marian has a friend who studies there. Why? C: No, as far as I know she doesn’t have a friend
who studies there, but now that I think about it, Cecilia has a friend who studies there . Would you like me to
contact her?

3. A: I’ve been to Miami twice. B: You’ve been to Miami twice? A: I’ve been to Miami twice. Have
you ever been to Miami? B: I’ve never been to Miami. No one in family has ever been to
Miami.

A: I didn’t do the homework . Did you do the homework? B: I did the homework. May I know why you
didn’t do the homework. You always do the homework .

4. A: Guess who is travelling to Sta. Cruz tomorrow? B: You are travelling to Sta. Cruz tomorrow, aren’t
you?. A: No, I’m not travelling tomorrow. Your sister and her boyfriend are travelling to Sta. Cruz
tomorrow

5. A. I’ll call your mom. B: No! You won’t call her! A: I will call her and there’s nothing you can do to
stop me. B: Oh there’s nothing I can I do? I can finally see your true colors. You’re such a snitch!
A: Oh, I am a snitch? I think you are a snitch.

6. A: You study Tourism, don’t you? B: I study Tourism. A: I’d like you to help me with something. I’m
doing some research about Sucre’s top sights. So, do you think you could help me with that? A: I’m afraid I
can’t help you. I’m crazy busy these days, but I definitely would help you if I could help you.

7. Raúl: Was everybody in the meeting last class? Oscar: I think Natalia was not in the meeting.
Carol: She was in the meeting. Natalia: Yes, I was in the meeting. Actually, I think everyone was in
the meeting. Were you in the meeting, Sarvia? Sarvia: Of course I was in the meeting.

8. A: Are you going to join the meeting tomorrow? B: I am going to join the meeting tomorrow. Aren’t you going
to join the meeting? I think you should join the meeting tomorrow. A: I might not join the meeting tomorrow.
