𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐃𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐒: 𝑳𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒘𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏

Presently, we celebrate the excellence and greatness of Filipino teachers with gratitude and profound
appreciation, commemorating their efforts on their pursuit of instilling life-long lessons among their
learners. Along with this celebration is the realizations being contemplated amidst feasts and
culmination ceremonies, deafened by silent woes and resounding burdens and burnouts being faced
by our educators.

Inculcating the very essence of education in building a patriotic and child-friendly nation, they
become a channel to impart the human body of knowledge to the future generation of leaders,
employers and workers. Education plays a crucial role in altering our way of lives, shifting our
beliefs, redirecting our destiny and even our wholeness as a human-being.

Through them (or professors and instructors in collegiate terminologies), education made its way to
change. Unfortunately, nothing has been made to change the education in the Philippines. Aside from
the never-ending lack of literacy among students, one of the gigantic issues being confronted by the
educational spectrum is the forgotten promises of an increase of salary among teachers.

According to the President of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) National Capital Region
Union, Ruby Bernardo that it is the issue of salary among teachers that has been neglected for a long
time, asserting to further push the Salary Standardization Law encapsulating the modification of
salary among government employees which include public teachers.

Moreover, not only salary is the problem, but as well the amount workloads that must be
accomplished by these modern-day heroes inside and outside the classroom. Frankly, lessons would
become more attainable if burdens are lessened, and quality education would not be attained if a
quality of life is impossible of being achieved among teachers— something that remains a far-fetched
concern in our country.

Now, is this something to feast? Or something to make a fist?

Teachers spare a piece of bread, yet no stones unturned. One main reason on the poor literacy among
learners is, perhaps, the poor recognition among teachers. According to the World Bank’s report in
2022, nine out of ten Filipino children aged 10 have a difficulty of reading simple texts— a clear
reflection on the continuing insolvency of learning poverty in the Philippines. Lest we forget also on
the socioeconomic problems of poverty encountered by students and teachers who are in dying
situation because of the pandemic and the general increase of prices.

The education in the Philippines will not be “matatag” without the teachers who untiringly worked
hard to educate their students, despite workloads and low salary. Currently, there is an urgent need to
improve our teacher’s economic conditions in order to enable them to contribute to our goal of
education recovery and quality improvement. The “confidential” funds would be of paramount help
among teachers and students if it will be utilized wisely, not corrupted.

Their efforts are an understatement of all the figurative languages we could ever utter to appreciate
them, more so if greater recognition will be given to them. Recognition is not to be obtained only by
certificates and applauses but as well in legislated laws and orders being promulgated by the
government. This is a reality of being a teacher in the Philippines, where overseas Filipino teachers
earned and experienced a luxurious and convenient life than those who stayed.

Still, as voters and as learners, we have never learned our lessons.
