Hello, everyone. My name is Joon-hee Cha and I would like to talk about my favorite
character, today. My favorite character is “Terminator” and he is from the movie called
“The Terminator.”

The Terminator is a hero, who comes from the future in this movie. He has a mechanical
body. His mission is to protect his mater’s family against bad guys.

The Terminator is tall and strong. He looks stubborn but is thoughtful when helping his
master’s family. At last he saves them by risking his life, because of his personality.

There are two reasons for liking the the Terminator. First, he is good at fighting and
defends enemies easily. Secondly, he is a unique character I haven’t seen before.

Suits
Carl: See anything?
Dug: No, my pack is not following us! Boy they are dumb.
Carl: This is crazy. I finally meet my childhood hero and he’s trying to
kill us! What a joke.
Dug: Hey, I know a joke. A squirrel walks up to a tree and says I forgot
to store acorns for winter and now I am dead. Ha! It is funny because
the squirrel gets dead.

I didn’t teach a single word about English
Combat Carls: Hut! Hut! Hut! Hut! Hut! Hut! Hut!

Bo Peep: Carl! Where you headed?

Combat Carl #1: Combat Carl just heard there's a birthday party at the playground on Main Street.

Combat Carl #2: Rumor has it, they got two pinatas.

Combat Carl #3: That could be 20 to 30 kids.

Bo Peep: Nice! [High-fives Giggle]

Combat Carl #1: Oh, yeah! Combat Carl's getting played with! [Two of the Combat Carls high-five each other
while the other one is left hanging] You guys in?

Bo Peep: You bet! Woody, you are gonna love this!

One more Example
TO-DO LIST

● Relate the scene with story

● Is it too difficult for your
students? Nah…. it’s okay
● Find other materials that
relates to the story
● Explain as much as you can!
● Make something!
TO-DO LIST

● Read something related to

the story.
● Read to students!
● If students can read, let
them read the part!
● If not, we can listen to
books too!
TO-DO LIST

● Show students stories

something they would enjoy.
● Have students research on
their own! Ask them what
they want to do.
● Find materials yourself that
relates to the story. In other
words find different platforms
● Have students learn the
theme-based words rather
than everyday expressions

TRANSMEDIA LEARNING
EXAMPLES
WHAT IS TRANSMEDIA?

● Use of Multiple media and technological platforms

● Multiple media may tell different stories but explore a
core experience (common theme), which can be
experienced through multiple narrative perspectives
● Consideration placed on user’s lifestyle, media habits,
context (place)
● Audience co-creates with storytellers resulting in
participatory design and emergent culture
HOW TO TRANSMEDIA
LEARNING?

-Use graphic novels, comics, videos, machinima, and film to

provide back-story
-Use social media and user generated content for
commentary developing into a storyline
-Use mobile, television/web for unfolding episodes.
-Provide several points of entry into the story
-Use all media, not just digital media

LEARNING? WHAT?
WHERE?
● Students are subconsciously receiving input of the target
language
● Not focusing too much on language, rather on content
● Multiple media platforms helps creating more knowledge
● It’s still better than textbooks no?
