Present Continuous

Uses:

The Present Continuous, or Present Progressive, tense is used for:

● actions that are happening now,
● temporary actions,
● picture description, and
● future arrangements.

Structure:

1) Affirmative form:
Subject + corresponding verb TO BE + verb with ING (ANDO / ENDO)
I → AM + verb with ING

You / We / They → ARE + verb with ING

He / She / It → IS + verb with ING

Be careful with words with ING that are not verbs! Some sentences SEEM to be written in
the Present Continuous tense BUT are in fact in Present Simple:
Examples:
This book is interesting! (INTERESANTE = ADJECTIVE)
Grammar is boring! (ABURRIDO/A = ADJECTIVE)
These lessons are enriching! (ENRIQUECEDOR/ES/A/S = ADJECTIVE)

To add the ING to the verb there are certain rules:

a. In MOST verbs you simply add the ING.
COOK → COOKING (COCINANDO)
b. If the verb ends in CONSONANT + VOWEL + CONSONANT and that last syllable is
STRESSED, the last consonant is written TWICE (you DOUBLE that consonant).
SWIM → SWIMMING (NADANDO)
c. If the verb ends in E, you have to REMOVE it before adding the ING.
DRIVE → DRIVING (MANEJANDO)

2) Negative form:
Subject + corresponding verb TO BE + NOT + verb with ING
I → AM NOT (I’m not) + verb with ING

You / We / They → ARE NOT (aren’t) + verb with ING

He / She / It → IS NOT (isn’t) + verb with ING

3) Interrogative form:
Verb TO BE + Subject + verb with ING?
AM I + verb with ING?
ARE you / we / they + verb with ING?
IS he /she /it + verb with ING?
