As YWCA of Mokokchung celebrates its Silver Jubilee, I remember its inception
like a dream. I met Ms. Vijayalakshmi back in 1997 during late December. She was the Vice President of the Eastern region of the National YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) of India. She and her husband visited Mokokchung village. Her husband was one of the speakers during the village council meeting. I was the associate women’s pastor for Mokokchung Baptist Arogo at the time. I met with her during this time, and we talked about the YWCA of India. I had known about YWCA of India from my college days, and the little talk I had with Ms. Vijayalakshmi intrigued me and inspired me to start a YWCA unit in Mokokchung. Therefore, during the month of May 1998, after Ms. Apokla Ben and I had discussed about starting YWCA of Mokokchung, we initiated a prayer cell with a few members. 25 years have passed since then, and the organisation has grown exponentially under the leadership of young, capable women achieving numerous accomplishments for which I am proud of, and I am immensely grateful to all the members. The YWCA of Mokokchung has been exposed to the rest of the world thanks to the help of the national YWCA of India. We have been in touch and have been sending reports to them, which has helped in making the North- East region more visible to the rest of the nation and the world. As the YWCA of Mokokchung steps into the golden era, this is my hope and prayer that under the enthusiastic leadership of the younger generation, it will continue to thrive and expand. I end with this quote: “Serve God by serving people”. T. Arenla Ao 1st President, YWCA of Mokokchung
