Scorpius Gnome.
I crochet Gnome in continuous spiral rounds with hook 2.0mm.
and DK Acrylic Yarns Camel, Stone, Toy and Cream/Peach
(300m/100g) and Gold Yarn (135m/25g) The Yarns in this pat-
tern are just a suggestion. You can use your favourite colours and
Yarn. That’s why I am usually don’t indicate manufacturers.
Please be aware not to mix different manufacturers. It is impor-
tant to compare the strength and length of the used Yarn. Using
Yarn from a few manufacturers for one figure can lead to wrong
proportions.
Also I used brown makeup eyeshadow for end of the claws.

- Use a stitch marker to mark the end or if you prefer the begin-
ning of each round.
- Make invisible decreases when using two front loops of st. for it.
- Work all the project using both loops of the stitch unless other-
wise noted.
- Some pictures may be presented with different colour of the
Yarn or are from my other projects.
- Before you start to crochet the item, please read “Tips and Techniques” pages.

Assembly.
Please ref. to the pictures.
— sew on the nose.
— make the beard.
Method 1.The beard can be made by tying strips (24-26 strips) of Yarn (mine is Toy Color Yarn) to
stitches all around the nose as marked on pic. with yellow pins. Each stop is approx. 18-20cm. in
length, if you make them too short will be very difficult to attach it to the toy and after you brush it
they can be too short.
Attach the strips very close around the nose also can add some to the chest, separate each strip
on strands and brush it with metal pet brush make the beard shape as you like. Please see the pic.
how to attach the strips from my other projects.

Method 2. Cut 24-26 strips of Yarn (mine is Toy Color Yarn) each approx. 18-20cm. in length,
make a knot in a middle, separate each strip on strands, brush it with pet brush.
Attach it above the nose, glue on the beard around nose and on the chest. Make
the beard your desire shape, trim it where needed.

After you brushed strands you can use steam iron or hair straightener to make
the yarn straight.

—Put the hat on the gnomes, stuff hats to fill out the shape. Saw on or glue on
the hats to the head.
Make some finishing touches and your Scorpius Gnome is ready.
Method 1. Method 2.

— sew

on/glue on claws and tail to the hat.

—optional: paint end of the claws in brown or black with acrylic/makeup/crayons/
markers or any paint you are familiar with. I painted it with brown eyeshadow.
Make some finishing touches and your Scorpius Gnome is ready.

MAGIC RING

Start crocheting in traditional (joined) rounds or continues spiral with a Magic Ring.

pull

sl. st+ ch1. for

sl.st in first st. for
traditional joined
spiral crochet
rounds crochet

Stop the beginning of the yarn between the fingers of the hand with which you hold the work. Wrap
the yarn once around your index finger crossing it on itself. With the crochet pass the upper yarn
under the first, so to make a loop.

Remove the ring from your index finger, continuing to hold it tightly.

Make the first chain through the loop on the hook thus blocking the yarn around the ring.

Crochet along the ring the single stitches indicated in the instructions , including the ring and the
beginning tail of the yarn.

Finally, always keeping the work firmly between your fingers, pull the beginning of the yarn to
tighten the ring to the desired size.

Join the round with sl. st in first st. for spiral way crochet and sl. st +ch1. for traditional (joined
rounds) crochet.

Tips and Techniques

HOW TO CROCHET IN THE TRADITIONAL ROUND WAY

The traditional round work involves closing each round before starting the next one. In the case of a
sc. work, the round is closed by a sl. st made in its first stitch, followed by a ch1. to bring the work to
the level of the next round. In this way inevitably appears a line along the closing of the rounds.
To make the gap between one round and the next less visible, you can proceed as described below.

Close the round with a sl. st made in the back loop of the first stitch, pass the hook in the first full
stitch and crochet the first sc. of the new round.

HOW TO CROCHET IN CONTINUES SPIRAL

In continues spiral work there are no interruptions between one round and the next, simply contin-
ue to crochet as described in the pattern.
This is why it’s important to mark first or last stitch of each round with a marker.
While in the traditional round work the beginning and the end of each round are aligned, in spiral
work they are characterised by a small step.

Tips and Techniques

INCREASE and DECREASE.

5 INCREASE
To make an increase, just work 2 single crochet stitches in the designated
stitch below.

6 DECREASE
The decrease is the transition from two stitches to one only.
To make an invisible decrease take the front loops of the two stitches to be joined on the hook, pass
the thread through them and make a sc.
Invisible decreases.

Traditional way decreases

To make traditional way decrease take both loops of the two stitches to be joined on the hook, pass
the thread through them and make a sc.

Tips and Techniques

Tips and Techniques.

HOW TO ATTACH A NEW YARN TO THE WORK with a sleep knot

Make a slip knot with the beginning of the new yarn and insert it on the hook. pass the hook in the
starting stitch and make a sc. as usual, the first sc. of the round.
Continue normally following the pattern.

THE TRADITIONAL WAY TO CHANGE COLOUR

To change from one colour to another during the work, make the last step of the last grey stitch, for
example, with the yarn of the next colour, orange in this case. You can 'crochet in' the tail ends as
you go. This will save you a lot of 'weaving in' in the end.

INVISIBLE START IN A SPIRAL WORK

How to attach a new yarn to the work without creating a step, but a gradual increase compared to
the round below.
Catch the yarn through the back loop of the stitch before the one to be worked, creating the first
loop on the hook. Work the first sc. as usual in the first stitch.

Tips and Techniques

Tips and Techniques.

HOW TO MAKE AN INVISIBLE FINISH FOR OPEN EDGES

To start, complete your last st. and then cut the yarn.

Pull the loop on your hook to draw cut yarn tail up to the top, then thread
the yarn tail onto a tapestry/yarn needle. Now we are going to join it seam-
lessly to the rest of the round. To do this, skip the next st., and insert your
needle, going from front to back, under both loops of the following stitch.
Draw the yarn through to the back.

Now go back to your final stitch that has the yarn tail emerging from the middle of it. Insert your
needle down into this st. so it passed under both the back loop of the st. and the back bar behind
that poop. Pull on the yarn tail to draw it smaller until the loop matches the size of all the loops in
top/edge round of your piece.

Weave the yarn tail through the back of several st. of your piece and trim the remaining yarn tail.
