The simplest mea s urement that can be
made with t he bridge is t he impe dance level at
a point along a coaxia l tran s mission line . For
this measurement, t he line i s interrupted; the
end of the l i ne coming from the source is connected
to the IN conn ecto r and the end of th e line towards
the loa~is conne cted t o th e OUT connector. A
power level 0= up t o 5,000 watts can be a pplied
t o th e bridge with such connections . The contro ls
are then ad justed, as follows : Meter swit ch i n
DIR position ; AMP. IN/OUT switch in the OUT position ;
SEN control at minimum (full countercl ockwise) ;
R dial at ze r o; X dial at zero ; L- C s wit ch i n L
position and al l - adder switches to- O. Power is the n
appli e d to the circuit and the ga i n control is ad-
vanced until an ups c~ l e indication on the meter is
obtained. The R and X dials are then adjusted for
a minimum reading on the meter .

SiuL:t! the bridge will usually n01: be in-
serted directly into a line equipped with the proper
connectors , a set of heavy cl i p leads is supplied
for connecting the bridge into the antenna or match-
ing network circuit. Both of the clip ground leads
should be grounded when these leads are used .

The R dial of the OIB - 3 is calibrated below
zero to about -5 ohms . This facilitates measu-
rement of operating resistance Yalues near zero
without the reversing technique described above .

Therefore, two waves arrive at the meter
circuit. They are k rs Wand k r LW . If thes e two
waves are of equal magnitude and opposite time
phase, the meter indication will be zero. The
null condition of the bridge will be:

When t hes e reflection coefficient s are re -
placed by the i r defining i mpeda nce ratios, and
t h e resulti ng equation is so lved for ZL, then
Ys C Yb (7)

This result is obtain ed, assuming an exact
centertap of the secondary line. Other tap ratios
may be used, but they will modify this equation .
Equation 7 is similar to Eq. 5, except that a
negative term has been added. This means that
the ne gative of t he bias admittance Yb is effec-
tively in pa rallel w ith t he admittance of the
s t andard Ys . The two limita tions of the circuit
in Figure 2A a re now circumvented, and the re-
quirement for an infini t e res i stance standa rd no
longer exists. When ZL is zero, it is only nec-
essary that Ys and Yb be equal . Neither is re-
quired to be zero. It is not necessary to have
a variable inductor for c a pacitive loa ds. The
variable capacitor standard can be swit ched from
terminal C to termina l A. Equation 7 shows that
this ha's the effect of reversing the sign of
t h e susceptance of this standard .

from the cover of the shielding box by three
shielded teflon feed-through terminals. these
terminals are the A. B~ and C points shown
in Figure 2B. The shielding box should never
be opened in the field since this will affect
the primary calibration of the bridge.

TV . MAINTENANCE
Due to the complexity of the RF distributed
circuit and the interaction of all controls it is
recommended that field maintenance not be attempted
on thi s unit . If the unit is damaged or ceases to
function, it should be returned t o the factory
for maintenance and calibration.
