6 WEDDING GUIDE • MAY 11, 2023 GROSSE POINTE NEWS
E llie Thams has SpringHill Summer
Camp to thank for introducing her to the love
of her life, Phil Carter.
“I went to SpringHill every summer since
first grade as a camper and I always knew I
would work there one year,” Ellie said. “There
was a watersports boat driver position avail-
able and even though it’s not exactly the job I
wanted, I took it.”
Taking a chance on a summer job between
her junior and senior year at University of Day-
ton ended up being one of the best decisions
she ever made. Her now-husband was her area
director during the three months at camp.
On one of the first days of camp, Ellie’s boat
engine malfunctioned completely and left
her stranded in the middle of the lake with a
dozen campers. Lucky for her, Phil was just
around the bend and able to jump into action.
What a way to break the ice.
Unfortunately, the timing was off for these
two. Ellie was in a relationship and Phil had
just gotten out of one. Despite this, the pair
became fast friends over camp songs, bon-
fires, and boat mishaps that kept them laugh-
ing all summer long.
After leaving camp, they returned to their
separate lives, keeping in touch with one an-
other occasionally. A few years later, Ellie slid
into Phil’s DMs on Instagram and asked him
if he might want to meet up.

The magic of Metamora abounds in all four seasons. Here,

the golden, rich colors of fall are the perfect backdrop for
a stunning, yet nature-filled wedding. At left, the bride and
groom soak it all in at the water’s edge. At top, the newlyweds
share a peaceful moment lakeside between the ceremony
and the reception. Left, the twinkling lights, candles and
stunning florals create the perfect cozy atmosphere in the
dramatic clear canopy tent providing breathtaking views of
the property.

10 WEDDING GUIDE • MAY 11, 2023 GROSSE POINTE NEWS
“The message popped up on my
phone and I was surprised and excited
to see that she reached out,” Phil said.
“We made plans to go to Blake’s Cider
Mill and catch up soon after.”
Ellie and Phil’s date lasted over three
hours. They bonded over their mutu-
al love for family, friends, nature and
most importantly, great food. After
two years of dinner dates and incred-
ible adventures, they got engaged on
February 9, 2022, in Denver, Colorado.
“We decided to go on a hike and be-
fore I knew it, Phil was on one knee,”
Ellie said. “I had no idea the engage-
ment was coming because I didn’t
think he had a ring. I was completely
surprised.”
With the help of Rotterman Jewelers
in Brighton, Michigan, Phil designed
the ring and brought it back to Denver,
Colorado, where Ellie and Phil were
living at the time. During a routine
hike with their puppy, Benson, Phil
asked Ellie for her hand in marriage.
The planning process was fast and
furious as Ellie had always dreamt of
a fall wedding. The couple aimed for
an October 2022 date, but due to the
rescheduling of COVID-19 weddings,
finding their perfect venue proved to
be challenging.
“I always wanted to have a fall wed-
ding,” Ellie said. “Once we got en-
gaged in February, I knew it would
be a quick turnaround to have our
wedding that October. We looked ev-
erywhere to find a venue that fit the
laidback but whimsical vibe we were
going for. Unfortunately, every venue
we knew about was booked up.”
After many planning conversa-
tions, Ellie’s Maid of Honor suggested

The guests were invited to rise as the bride stepped out in a
stunning white Sequoia gown by Leanne Marshall. With beauti-
ful statement sleeves and a subtle texture, this simple dress made
an impact.
“I tried on so many dresses but once I put this one on, I knew
it was perfect,” Ellie said. “I am a sucker for fun sleeves and the
slit allowed me to show off my western style booties when I
walked.”
In a sweet ode to family, the wedding ceremony was officiated
by Phil’s two sisters and the couple wrote their own vows to one
another. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Ellie and Phil
committed to spending their lives together.
“The ceremony was really special,” said Phil. “Being in Meta-
mora with all of our family and friends was the highlight of my
life thus far. It was a joyful day for everyone.”
After cocktail hour on the deck, guests made their way into
the spacious tent located just a few yards ahead for speeches,
dinner, and an epic dance party led by Nick Kuhl and The Gang.
“My favorite part of the reception was Nick Kuhl’s incredible
band,” said Ellie. “I don’t think anyone sat down all night. The
dance floor was packed!”
While guests danced the night away, they enjoyed signature
drinks handpicked by Ellie and Phil. A sage-infused gin gim-
let and spicy margarita with cucumber jalapeno-infused tequila
served as the “his and hers” drinks for the night.
Flexible seating in the tent allowed for guests to mingle and
supported Ellie’s cozy, family-style vision. Family and friends
were able to chat at tables just outside the tent, as well, to enjoy
panoramic views of the lake. For the football fans in attendance,
the Michigan vs. Michigan State game was broadcast on the
main lodge television for everyone to enjoy.
“If I had to give one piece of advice, it would be to explore dif-
ferent options outside of what you see other brides doing,” Ellie
said. “Don’t be afraid to be creative to make your vision a reality.”
When the night ended, the entire party relished at the amount
of love and laughter present in the room. The Carter’s spectacu-

“The more time we have together, the better the ability to
reach your goals and provide ample time for proper healing,”
founder, nurse practitioner and head injector Carrie Evatz said.
The basics feature anti-wrinkle injections — Botox, Dysport
and Xeomin — and professional/ medical grade skincare; a
light- or-medium depth chemical peel; and a customized facial.
“If your current skincare regimen does not include retinol,
then it is time to initiate this into your skincare routine,”
Evatz encouraged. “This powerhouse aids with reducing
lines, wrinkles and discoloration in the comfort of your own
home. Think of it as a gentle at-home treatment for slowly
resurfacing your skin.”
For those who wish to glide the extra mile, extras can
include energy devices such as laser therapy and radio

These devices notably provide little to no downtime, are non-

Additional offerings feature vitamin shots, as well as dermal

“When placed correctly, fillers should simply refresh your
appearance,” Evatz said. “Our goal at Pure Beauty & Wellness
is to restore lost volume to your natural looking self.”
As the local trusted source for skincare and medical aesthetic

need previous work from others reversed and corrected.
“If people have had some bad work — they were over

was done with them we may be able to dissolve and start

a local surgeon and then I do fix a lot of people’s work that
maybe wasn’t done the best.”

GROSSE POINTE GRANDEUR By Olivia Monette

S amantha Campau and Trevor Wild’s

Grosse Pointe wedding was a timelessly ele-
gant celebration held at the Country Club of
Detroit.
Grosse Pointe native, Samantha, and her
now-husband Trevor, initially met at school
as young teenagers.
“Trevor and I first met when my family was
living in Ann Arbor during my middle school
years,” Samantha said. “We went to the same
combined middle and high school. Trevor’s
older sister babysat for my younger brothers.”
Years later, Trevor had just finished his
MBA from the University of Michigan as Sa-
mantha was heading into her senior year at
Southern Methodist University. As Trevor
was starting his career in Detroit, Samantha
was interning for a company located in the
same area.
“We reconnected the summer before my
senior year of college while I was interning
downtown,” Samantha said. “The rest is
history!”
After a few years of dating, Trevor pro-
posed in the peony garden at the Ann Arbor
Arboretum. “Both of our families knew about
his plan and we were able to celebrate with
them afterwards,” Samantha said. “It was re-
ally special.”
After toasting their engagement, the cou-
ple began the planning process with the help
of Ines & Marie’s full service event planning,
design and floral studio. After choosing their
planner, the couple’s perfect day started to
take form.
Choosing their ceremony location and
venue came naturally to the two as they had
always dreamt of a classic, timeless wedding
close to Samantha’s home.
The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacra-
ment was chosen for the ceremony with a
reception to follow at The Country Club of
Detroit.
One of the bride’s favorite moments
was picking out her stunning Oscar De

Birmingham, Michigan. The classic strapless
dress became the perfect anchor for the overall
feel of the wedding.
“I loved the classic silhouette and detail on
the bodice,” Samantha said. “I decided to add
a bow to the back and a more ornate veil. I felt
like I was able to add my own personal style to
the look with these additions.”
After a little morning rain on the wedding
day, the clouds parted and the sun was shining
brightly. The late September weather made for
the perfect early fall day.
Knowing the importance of family, friends
and the feel of a local wedding, Samantha chose
to begin the wedding day getting ready with her
mother, aunt and bridesmaids at her mother’s
house in Grosse Pointe Park.
Girlie Girl Salon, located in Grosse Pointe
Woods, was on-site to provide hair and makeup
services to all of the women in the bridal party.

“I wanted the morning of the wedding to feel
calm, homey and comfortable,” Samantha said. “It
felt like a natural place to get ready and do the first
look with the comforts of home and natural beau-
ty surrounding us.”
After taking photos overlooking Lake St. Clair,
Samantha, Trevor and their bridal party headed to
the church for their ceremony.
From there, the entire 300-person wedding was
ready to party as they arrived at The Country Club
of Detroit for a beautiful tented celebration.
Pale pink and white flowers by Ines & Marie
adorned the interior of the tent area. The Blue Wa-
ter Kings set up their instruments at the end of the
tent to keep the dance floor rocking all night long.
“Walking into the tent as husband and wife was
such a great feeling,” Samantha said. “From the
decor to speeches to the amazing food, everything
was incredible.”
A clear-sided tent allowed sunlight to pour into
the tent. The greenery of the trees and golf course
were visible from all angles.
“I loved that everyone could be under one ‘roof’
since we had a larger wedding,” Samantha ex-
plained.
After dinner, the bride changed into a short
dress with a feathered hem to dance the night
away. Guests spent the night drinking champagne,
mingling with beloved family and friends and tak-
ing everything in. The grand wedding was perfec-
tion from start to finish.
“The experience with Ines & Marie was truly
amazing,” said Samantha. “They have a compre-
hensive planning process that leaves no stone
unturned. They really made us all feel so at ease
during the planning process and on the day of —
knowing everything was taken care of!” After the
weekend was over, the couple headed to Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico, for a week of rest and relaxation
before returning to their careers in Ann Arbor,
Michigan.
“For all future brides, enjoy every single mo-
ment of your engagement, planning and wedding
weekend,” Samantha said. “It truly goes by so fast!”

This nature-loving couple escaped to the Leelanau
Peninsula for their nuptials. Tucked away in the middle
of the Peninsula lies a hidden gem — a wedding venue
where guests can camp on property for the week or the
weekend of the big event. All 160 guests traveled in
golf carts through the winding woods to a picturesque
location for the couple’s ceremony. The concept was for
the wedding to be totally immersed in nature.
The reception was at the bottom of a hill as guests
exited the forest to a beautiful minimalistic building
overlooking the rolling hills and forests of the Peninsula.
It was truly a breath of fresh air!

EXPERT
ADVICE
From a professional wedding planner
1. Hire a planner. A wise one who listens and genuinely cares.
2. Book a good band or DJ.
3. Be sure to have drinks at the ready as guests arrive so there is no waiting at the bar.
4. Hire a good photographer you can trust, who hears your input and goes with the flow. Then trust them
to do the job.
5. Surround yourself with the people who make you the happiest, who genuinely care about you and
listen to what you say about what you want. That may just be a few special bridesmaids (and let me tell
you how much better that is than having 10 dramatic friends creating confusion.)
NOTE: If you have 10 wonderful friends who are there for you — then include them, but just be sure they
are there for YOU on your most special day.
6. Don’t just follow trends. Do what feels right to you. Never do anything because it’s what you think you
should do.
7. Don’t feel obligated to have a bridal party introduction at your reception. Just have the DJ or band
celebrate you and your newlywed husband or wife. Your guests will thank you!
8. Definitely offer a late night snack. Everyone loves it. You can make it simple, just know it will be
appreciated!
9. Candles make everything more beautiful.
10. Trust your vendors. This is their job, this is what they specialize in. Let them do their best to carry out
the best possible wedding for you and your mate. Then relax and enjoy your day!

GROSSE POINTE NEWS WEDDING GUIDE • MAY 11, 2023 63

SWEET & Unique By Donna Zetterlund

Trending in wedding desserts this year is a totally in-

dividual and creative approach to the happy ending to
your wedding meal. Just about anything goes, as long
as it contributes to the overall mood and tone of your
wedding theme — or gives guests a peek into the person-
alities of the new bride and groom.
Sandra Kravitz, from The Cheesecake Shoppe in
St. Clair Shores, is experienced in providing unique
wedding delectibles. She shared some of the exciting
non-traditional ideas that are most-requested by the re-
cent newlyweds who have come into her shop.
“A non-traditional option for weddings is the dessert
table filled with an assortment of miniature desserts for
the guests to choose. These can include cupcakes, cake
pops, cookies, donuts and dessert parfait cups. The pos-
sibilities are endless,” Kravitz said.
“Many couples choose a smaller wedding cake and
then opt to add the dessert table, “ she added.
The Cheesecake Shoppe can cater miniature cup-
cakes that are the perfect match to their full size cake
and cheesecake options. Also popular are bite-sized
cheesecake or cake tartlets, cookies or brownie bars
(layers of crust, cake and cheesecake), cake pops and
dessert shooter cups filled with layers of mousse, cheese-
cake and whipped cream.
Over at Morning Glory bakery, the creativity flows
through magnificent decorated tiered cakes, groom’s
cakes, delicately-accentuated cookies and more. They
can fill a dessert table with intricate mousse pastries,
charming pull-apart cupcake displays in the shape of a
wedding dress (or just about anything you can imagine)
and even decadent chocolate dipped strawberries deco-
rated to look like tiny tuxedos. The sky is the limit with a
little sugar, butter and imagination.
At Bakehouse 46, they’re busy dreaming up new des-
sert displays to make guests ooh and ahh regularly. A
recent wedding display using donuts atop the cake and

Wedding planner Sarah Wintersteen told insider.com that cake trends for 2023
will bring back lots of color and a touch of whimsy, like the pretty cake from
Morning Glory, left, in a fun blend of dramatic oranges against black and white.

and are the perfect touch for the party sweets table. Chocolate and cara-
mel-dipped pretzels and apples make wonderful items to nibble on in be-
tween dance sets. The Chocolate Bar Cafe can also supply the goods for
the popular candy stations favored by today’s couples with chocolates,
lollipops, jelly beans and traditional nostalgic candy favorites.
Wedding cakes by The Chocolate Bar Cafe are out of this world, cus-
tom-made in a variety of flavors and fillings with buttercream frostings
(and other icings) that get rave reviews from customers.
All the bakeries mentioned advise that you allow plenty of time to
order your cake or sweets presentations. Kravitz, of The Cheesecake
Shoppe, recommends planning ahead at least four months before your Women’s Clothing Boutique
wedding day. She suggests couples schedule a consultation and tasting to and Home Accessories
sample the range of flavors and options available so you make the right
