Engineered Fluids

When the

he film cleaning industry, like most others, is coming under
scrutiny for its use of chlorinated solvents. 1,1,1-trichloroethane
(1,1,1-TCA) and perchloroethylene (perc), in particular, are being targeted as potential
carcinogens and hazardous air pollutants by regulatory agencies and local
governments. Already California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District
(SCAQMD) has proposed reducing toxic emissions and risk from film cleaning
operations by requiring a 90% reduction in uncontrolled perc emissions.

will you
be prepared?
Fortunately, there is a solution. Lipsner-Smith, working with 3M, has developed the
CF8200 Ultrasonic Film Cleaning Machine—a breakthrough innovation in film
cleaning technology.
The solvent used in the CF8200 system, 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluid HFE-8200,
has zero ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential. This
hydrofluoroether (HFE) material is nonflammable and not classified as a volatile
organic compound (VOC) by the U.S. EPA. Moreover, Novec fluid HFE-8200 is listed
as a Clean Air Solvent by the SCAQMD.
Together, the CF8200 machine and Novec fluid HFE-8200 offer the industry a
balanced, long-term, sustainable alternative to traditional cleaning with
chlorinated solvents.
Solutions
working
for you
inimizing the transmission of non-photographic defects from one
generation to the next is the best reason to use a high-quality film
cleaning system. Dirt, oil mottle and other contaminants can cause scratches and
abrasions unless removed. The CF8200 system, using 3M™ Novec™ Engineered
Fluid HFE-8200, has been proven by some of the world’s top studios and film labs
to clean film effectively—in half the time of conventional machines. And, because
of its favorable environmental and toxicity profile, you can be assured that this
solution will be around for a long time to come.
Negative stock
The Lipsner-Smith CF8200 Ultrasonic Film Cleaning Machine is the most
effective way to clean original negatives. Physical contact with the film is
minimized by immersing the film in a warm bath of Novec fluid HFE-8200 and
ultrasonically removing dirt and other contamination commonly found in a telecine
environment.
Archival film
For delicate archival film, the CF8200 system is ideal. Not only is there no film
contact by the operator or by anything else, but HFE-8200 fluid is exceedingly
gentle and compatible with a wide array of film stock.
Nitrate stock
Nitrate film stock has always posed problems for film cleaning professionals.
Because Novec fluid HFE-8200 is nonflammable, however, you can use the same

Uncompromising
ndoubtedly the major advantage of the Lipsner-Smith CF-8200
Ultrasonic Film Cleaning Machine is its ability to move you and your
company into the next stage of film cleaning, eliminating noxious chemistry and its
attendant health, safety and regulatory baggage.
The CF8200 system goes farther than that, however, providing cleaning
performance equivalent or better than perc, better materials compatibility and
lower cost-in-use figures.
High performance clean
The special properties of Novec fluid HFE-8200 and the advanced design of the
CF8200 system allow successful cleaning and drying at running speeds up to 240 feet
per minute! Wet buffers—essential for acceptable cleaning—rotate at over 200 rpm.
And a new ultrasonic system is nearly four times more powerful than previous designs.
Materials compatibility
All solvents will leach plasticizer from film during the cleaning process. How little
plasticizer is removed, however, may be the difference between brittle film and usable
film after extended film cleaning.
Novec fluid HFE-8200 exhibits excellent compatibility with a wide range of film
substrates, including acetate and Estar™. Kodak recently tested the relative propensity
of film cleaning solvents to leach plasticizer from Eastman Color Negative (ECN)
and Eastman Color
Intermediate (ECI) film. Propensity to Leach Plasticizer
