A gas contained in a vertical, frictionless piston-cylinder device. The piston has a mass of 4 kg and
cross-sectional area of 35 cm². A compressed spring above the piston exerts a force 60 N on the
piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the pressure inside the cylinder.
GIVEN: Patm= 95kpa Mp= 4kg A= 35cm^2
SOLUTION:
95 kpa to Pa = 95 x 1000/1 = 9500 Pa

Pinside = Patm + Pspring + Pwt piston

Pspring = F/A = 60 N / 35x10^-4 m^2 = 17142.8 N/m^2

W= 4kg x 9.81 m/s^2 = 39.240N
Pwt= W/A = 39.240N / 35x10^-4 m^2 = 11211.4 N/m^2

Pinside = 9500 N/m^2 + 17142.8 N/m^2 + 11211.4 N/m^2

Pinside =123.35x10^3 N/m^2
Pinside = 123.35 kpa or 123.4 kpa
