MOVIE JOURNAL

Movie 1

The Thing, John Carpenter, US 1982, 109 mins

‘The Thing 1982’ was a remake of ‘The Thing from Another World 1951’. This film was stared by world
class actors of that time such as Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley and so on. The films story was
slow, the characters were very well developed and built, the scenic location which adds a lot to the
story. The story was just brilliant! An alien from outer space who had some form intelligence, can
consume a being in order to mimic their appearances and vocals in order to survive. And the ending was
just a major suspense, like is one of them the alien or neither of them is an alien, did the alien die in the
fire or escape in to the cold and hibernate until it is stumbled upon by for other unfortunate group of
scientist or explorers. One thing I’ve always hated about the genre Horror is that the characters in the
films are dumb, like we all know you will get killed if you go there, even so they still go there and they
ended up dead anyway and also, they have no sense of communications and end up eventually dead
one by one. Other than that personal negative point for the genre, overall the film was shot and directed
beautifully, a job well done for its time. The color pallet was on point with the genre’s theme, the colors
are blue, red, white, and black.

Movie 2

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino, 2019, 2h41m

When I was younger cowboy movies were one of my favorite types of movie. And now Tarantino has
made a fiction film showing what story could have been behind the scene regarding the actor and his
stun double. Bring the hippies into the movie was a huge idea because I don’t think so there are any
authentic hippies remaining, even if some call themselves hippies. The movies was beautiful with back
stories for the important characters. The climax was just amazing and hilarious at the same time.
Regarding sound I don’t really remember that much about it but I’m sure it was good and up to the
mark.

Movie 3

The Holy Mountain, Alejandro, Mexico 1973, 11 4mins

A brilliant film, just wow! The art work was on point, Art direction & Production Design department did a
wonderful job. Not only a lot of art work and models were created but destroyed as well. I believe that
this film falls under ‘Fantasy Drama’ genre. It seems like the world is set in an alternate universe where
the world is filled with ‘Greed and Corruption’, it has a lot of nudity but it was clean nothing that
disturbing. This film is really abstract both in its art as well as it’s storytelling method. I was in love with
the rainbow room and how birds, vegetables and fruits come out of the corps of the deceased, like I
don’t really understand for what reason the director chose to do this but I think so I understand it in my
own way. For example; a bird came out of the deceased and I feel that signify that the deceased wanted
to be free hence the bird, but there was also a scene where instead of blood it was strawberries. It’s
weird and fascinating in its own as well, some people might understand it and some might not or they
might like it or might not. As for me I like it. Another scene that I must share was the miniature model of
the Mayan civilization where the director used ‘Anthropomorphism’, to describe a human as an animal
or inanimate object, the Mayan were represented by lizards and Britishers as frogs. Amazing movie the
ending was a joke hahaha….

Movie 4

Taipei Story, Edward Yang, Taiwan 1985, 120mins

A story in Taipei a city in Taiwan, the story revolves around Lung and Chen who are friend turn lovers.
This film shows Taipei as how the director Edward Yang envision it to be portrayed. Lighting of this film
is amazing, especially during the night scenes. The movie has a few metaphors but the most iconic one
must be ending on context-less image of Taipei’s new architecture refracting the passing traffic below,
we now see Taipei as Yang sees it, regardless of its reality. Yang has built the city for us a frame at a
time, and given us both the thematic material and space to construct meaning from his perspective of it.
Ultimately position Lung and chin as looking alternatively into the past or future demonstrates Yang’s
only conflict outlook.

Movie 5

Paper Moon, Peter Bogdanovich, US. 1973, 102mins

It’s a road trip film, what makes this type of movie or genre hard to pull off and so fun to watch is its
spontaneity, the free-flowing structure provided by then genre gives the screenwriter a lot of freedom
which makes it really hard to write as it doesn’t come with a do it yourself predictable beat by beat
structure of another story genre. The movie is funny and full of adventures. The protagonists have a
daughter-father complex. Film noir are one of every current day cinematographers wish and desire to
shoot the film. It’s a short film that makes it feel even shorter while watching it, this is due to the film
divided into 3 acts and divided into multiple scenes and every scene has its own short story.
