Inadequate computer skills among graphics design students at the university level can have
significant implications for their future success in the field. The use of computer-aided design (CAD)
software and other graphic design programs is essential for producing high-quality visual graphic
works (“Investigation on the Poor Computer Graphic Design Skills among Art and Design Students at
University”, 2019). However, there is evidence to suggest that the teaching of computer graphic
design courses may be inadequate and outdated.

One study found that the teaching of computer-aided graphic design courses often focuses on
theoretical knowledge and software operation skills, with limited emphasis on creativity and
autonomous learning (Liu & Zhou, 2020). This approach may result in students lacking the necessary
skills and enthusiasm for learning graphic design (Liu & Zhou, 2020). Additionally, the study revealed
that the knowledge structure in these courses is often single, and students may lack creative ideas
(Liu & Zhou, 2020).

Furthermore, the de-emphasis of engineering graphics courses in engineering curricula has been
observed, which may contribute to a lack of visualization skills among students (Sorby & Baartmans,
2000). Visualization skills are crucial for effectively utilizing computer-based technology in graphic
design (Sorby & Baartmans, 2000).

To address these issues, it is important to update and enhance the teaching methods and curriculum
for graphic design courses. The use of differentiated methods of teaching graphic design, such as
online graphic design platforms, can help improve students’ skills and engagement (Gula et al.,
2023). Computer-based peer review has also been shown to be effective in improving student
performance and self-efficacy in graphic design courses (Wagner & Rutherford, 2019).

In addition to improving teaching methods, it is crucial to ensure that teachers have the necessary
skills and knowledge to effectively teach computer graphic design. The optimization of teachers’
teaching behaviors in the virtual digital graphic design teaching environment, including the use of
virtual reality technology, can enhance their ability to cultivate students’ practical abilities in art
design (Zhang et al., 2022).

Overall, addressing the inadequate computer skills among graphics design students requires a
comprehensive approach that includes updating the curriculum, improving teaching methods, and
providing teachers with the necessary training and resources. By doing so, students can develop the
essential computer skills needed for success in the field of graphic design.
