Sheila aged 59, says ´I joined to see what my grandchildren are doing, as my daughter posts videos and photos
of them. It´s a much better way to see what they are doing than waiting for letters and photos in the post. That´s
how we did it when I was a child.
Ironically, Sheila's grandchildren are less likely to use Facebook themselves. Children under 17 in the UK are
leaving the site, but they are not going far from their smartphones. Chloe, aged 15, even sleeps with her phone
because it is her alarm clock, so she has to look at it before she goes to sleep and as soon as she wakes up.
Unlike her grandmother´s generation, Chloe´s age group is spending so much time on their phones at home that
they are missing out on spending time with their friends in real life. Sheila, on the other hand, has made contact
with old friends from school she hadn’t heard from in 40 years.
Teenagers might have their parents to thank for their smartphone and social media addiction as their parents
were the early adopters of the smartphone. They used to be on their phones or laptops constantly so how could
they tell their children to get off their phones if they were always in front of a screen? Some parents are now
trying to spend more quality time with their children. Is it only a matter of time until the older generation and
the younger generation catch up with the new trend for a less digital life?

Cloning is "making a copy of a plant or animal by taking a cell from it and developing it artificially". There is nothing new
about this. The first cloned frog appeared in 1968. But interest in cloning grew in 1997 when Dr. Ian Wilmut announced
thebirth of the world´s first cloned sheep Dolly. Many people were worried: what if some techniques were used for some
rich, elderly person to reinvent himself; or if an evil dictator produced hundreds of copies of himself in order to take over
the world?
The possible benefits of cloning, however, are numerous, for artificially producing human tissues and organs for transplant,
and for preserving endangered animal species. Biologists have already genetically engineered headless frogs so it may in
thefuture be possible to clone headless humans whose organs could be used for transplants. But would we want to?
In one famous case, a girl born with a rare bone condition that left her with only one ear, had a new one grown for her.
And the medical achievements continue! If you are a grey-haired, colour-blind man, there may be good news on the horizon.
A doctor in England has announced that by adding a small amount of pigment to an ordinary pair of glasses he has been
ableto cure colour-blindness. To prevent grey hair, a special shampoo has been developed that fools pigment cells into
producingmelamin, which gives hair its colour.
Could it be possible for all the things you need to know to be implanted in your brain on a silicon chip? Doctors at the Max
Planck Institute claim to have found a way of connecting nerve cells to a silicon chip. Such implants could be used to restore
vision to people who have become blind, but also to increase human intelligence.

CELEBRITIES
A
Celebrities are everywhere nowadays: on TV, in magazines, online. Is this preoccupation with famous people harmless fun or is it
bad for us? How many people are truly obsessed with modern media idols? And on the other hand, can fame be harmful to the
celebrities?
B
Studies suggest that the vast majority of teenagers do not really admire celebrities. Researchers have identified three kinds of fans.
About 15% of young people have an ‘entertainment-social’ interest. They love chatting about their favourite celebrities with
friends. Only 5% feel that they have an ‘intense-personal’ relationship with a celebrity. Sometimes they see them as their soulmate.
These people are more at risk from depression and anxiety.
C
What about the celebrities themselves? A study in the USA tried to measure narcissism. Researchers looked at 200 celebrities, 200
young adults with Masters in Business Administration (a group known for being narcissistic) and a nationally representative group
using the same questionnaire. As was expected, the celebrities were significantly more narcissistic than the MBAs and both groups
were a lot more narcissistic than the general population.
D
Four kinds of celebrities were included in the study. The most narcissistic were the ones who had become famous through reality
TV shows. Next came comedians, who scored highest on feelings of superiority. Then came actors, and the least narcissistic were
musicians. One interesting result was that there was no connection between narcissism and the length of time the celebrity had been
famous. This means that becoming famous probably did not make the celebrities narcissistic – they already were beforehand.
E
So, what can we learn from this? People who are very successful or famous tend to be narcissists and tend to be workaholics. As we
can see from celebrity magazines, they are also often desperate and lonely.
3 Most young people are not very much concerned about celebrities.
Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.
5 The research concluded that the experience of being a celebrity made people more T F
narcissist than they were previously.

Many people would like to learn how to play a musical instrument, but they are put off by one big problem: what to
play? Here are a few questions to help you decide.
A
Many instruments are versatile, but some are more suited to certain types of music. Although there is some classical
repertoire for the saxophone, for example, people associate it more with jazz, and it is not a permanent feature of many
orchestras. Some instruments may lend themselves better than others to the music you like, so consider this before you
start.
B
Think about your long-term future as a musician. If you want to play with other people, what sort of instrument would
be most practical? The initial attraction of playing a solo instrument like trumpet, violin, flute or lead guitar might fade
when you realise how many other people are competing with you to get the main part with the same instrument! If you
want to play rock music, there will always be a demand for bass players or drummers.
C
Many people live in flats and practising the drums, for example, will drive your neighbours crazy. Think about where
and when you are going to do it, as well as the patience of the people you live with or near. Electric versions of
instruments like the piano, drums, guitar and even violin give you the option of playing into the night using
headphones, while your housemates sleep in peace. Alternatively, you may need to consider going to a school or a
community centre to practise.
D
If you are still not sure, talk to people you know who already play instruments. They might even let you try theirs. It’s
also a good idea to find an experienced music teacher to help you decide.
1 Where to practice.
Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.

Love stories generally build up to a romantic climax and then end, leaving us with the impression that the couple lived happily ever
after. Sadly, the reality is rarely as rosy as this.
In the first flush of love nothing much matters beyond being together - no sacrifice is too great if it helps you spend more time with
the person whose mere presence intoxicates you. But when the intoxication starts to wear off, as it does unfortunately, little
misunderstandings start occurring, causing friction, irritation, long cold silences or angry rows.
Why is there this friction between men and women? John Gray thinks he knows the answer. The root cause of the problem,
apparently, is that men and women don't understand just how different they are emotionally. Men and women respond to problems
in very different ways and consequently have very different emotional needs. When people insist on their own needs and fail to
properly appreciate the needs of their partners there is bound to be friction.
Whereas women want to talk and talk about their problems, men withdraw into the caves of their mind to focus on solving the
problem. A man's self-esteem is built on a sense of how competent he is, so he feels he must develop the skills to solve his
problems on his own. Asking for help or idly expressing how terrible you feel is perceived as an admission of weakness and
incompetence. Rather than looking for understanding, men want their partners to admire them for the way they achieve their goals.
Task A Complete the phrases 1 to 3 with the corresponding ending a to e according to the text. There are two extra endings.

Critics and social commentators have agreed that the age of the hero is over. In the past people had heroes. They were the most
prominent figures in the public consciousness - people who had achieved great things, people who had done great deeds - proud,
noble leaders and bold pioneers.
B
The myth of the hero, though, could not survive when public life came to be dominated by the mass media. The mass media killed
off the heroes and replaced them with celebrities. To become a celebrity what matters is not so much the greatness of what you
have done but the exposure you are given in the media. A democratic culture also undermines the idea that certain individuals carry
a divine spark and are therefore, in a category superior to that of the rest of us.
C
Celebrities offer exclusive stories to increase their exposure, the media promote them to increase their ratings, and as a result we
pay so much attention to the glossy features, the exclusive interviews, and the various scandals and intrigues. They have no reason
to object to invasions of their private lives because this just keeps their names on everyone's lips, which is all that really matters.
D
For many people, the heroes of the past were an inspiration, they broadened our horizons by giving us an example of a course of
action that could be considered noble. Celebrities, on the other hand, with the stories about their hardships and their lucky breaks,
their affairs and their break-ups, prove to be nothing out of the ordinary. Reading about their lives does not inspire us or fill us with
purpose. If it isn't just an idle diversion - a way of killing time - it may well help us to resign ourselves to our own sense of
purposelessness.

Alexander Fleming was born on a farm in Scotland in 1881. When he was 13 he went to live with his brother, who was
a doctor in London. For 5 years he worked as a clerk in a shipping office, but he didn´t stop studying. In1902 he qualified
for entrance to a university. An uncle left him a little money, and that made it possible for Fleming to become a student at
the medical school of St. Mary´s hospital.
One of the famous doctors who taught the students at that time was Sir Almroth Wright, a bacteriologist. Thousands of
people owed their lives directly to his work, especially his development of inoculation against typhoid fever. During the
First World War, Fleming worked as an army doctor in France. He saw large numbers of soldiers die of their wounds
because the wounds made it possible for bacteria to work and multiply so quickly that the blood could not deal with
them. After that war Fleming specialised in bacteriology, and in 1924 he became the professor of bacteriology at St
Mary´s hospital. He continued the research looking for substances which would directly attack harmful bacteria without
doing any harm to the body themselves.
In 1928 he was studying the bacteria which caused a painful skin disease. But one day the microscope showed him
something else: he seemed to have discovered a powerful antibiotic. For years he continued his experiments. He found
that the substance was indeed a powerful antibiotic. He called it penicillin and he showed that it did not harm the body.
It was not until 1940 that biochemists were able to find a way of producing penicillin as a powder with an unchanging
character. Penicillin has saved lives and prevented suffering all over the world.

READING: Read this article and do tasks A and B 5 x 0.2 = 1 mark
For those of us who lead busy lives, it’s very tempting to take a short cut to looking good. Why bother to keep fit and
have a balanced diet when you can look good the easy way? But before you decide that looking after yourself is all too
much effort, think again.
A
There’s nothing like a suntan to make you feel good. Spend all day doing nothing on a beautiful beach and you’ll look
better at the end of it. A light tan will make you look younger and healthier, but there is increasing evidence that
sunbathing and using sunbeds are directly linked to skin cancer. In the long term, it also ages the skin. If you want a
tan, you may do better getting it out of a bottle.
B
If you want to change the colour of your hair, why not just do it? A quick visit to the hairdresser can make you sunnier,
more attractive and improve your self-image a great deal. The problem is how long it will last. When the dark roots
start to show again, it’s back to the salon. One visit too many and you can seriously damage your hair. In the end, there
is a danger that it will even fall out.
C
You may not think that a tattoo would improve your appearance, but it’s certainly fashionable, and for many people
that’s the same thing. A little red rose on your shoulder can seem like a good idea at the time, but how do you get rid of
it later? Worse still, there’s a very real danger of getting a serious disease such as HIV or hepatitis from dirty needles if
you go to an unqualified tattoo artist.
D
The bad news is that if you want to look good and stay looking good, you will have to accept the facts. A hectic life
style is no excuse. For the face, there’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep, because it is at night that the skin
repairs itself. For the rest of your body, make sure you have a good diet and keep active. That’s all there is to it. Sorry!
No one said it would be fun.
