URINARY SYSTEM SYSTEM JERALD VALERIO BSED GEN SCI 3 OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson , 75% of the students are able to;
• Identify the functions and different parts of the Urinary System;
• Illustrate the different parts of the Urinary System; • Appreciate the importance of knowing the functions of different organs in the Urinary System URINARY SYSTEM •group of organs in the body that filters out excess fluid and other substances from the bloodstream •Excretion : Removal of metabolic waste products from the body (mainly urea and uric acid). Metabolic wastes and excess ions are filtered out of the blood, along with water, and leave the body in the form of urine.
FUNCTIONS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
•Maintains water balance: adjusts blood volume and blood pressure. The renal system alters water retention and thirst to slowly change blood volume and keep blood pressure in a normal range.(Blood pressure homeostasis)
FUNCTIONS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
•Assist in maintaining electrolyte / salt balance (e.g., sodium, potassium, and calcium). Maintain salt balance in order to control blood volume
FUNCTIONS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
•Assist in maintaining acid base / pH balance of blood (7.35-7.45) by controlling the loss of hydrogen ions and bicarbonate ions in urine.
FUNCTIONS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
•SECRETION OF HORMONES. EXAMPLE : ERYTHROPOIETIN / EPO
FUNCTIONS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
ORGANS OF THE RENAL/ URINARY SYSTEM KIDNEY : a pair of bean-shaped organs which filter blood and produce urine.. They remove wastes, control the body’s fluid balance, and keep the right levels of electrolytes. Kidneys are the most complex and critical part of the urinary system.
ORGANS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
LAYERS OF THE KIDNEY LAYERS OF THE KIDNEY RENAL CORTEX - contains the renal corpuscles and the renal tubules except for parts of the loop of Henle which descend into the renal medulla. LAYERS OF THE KIDNEY RENAL MEDULLA - the inner part of the kidney. The medulla helps regulate the concentration of urine by filtering out water, salts, and acid LAYERS OF THE KIDNEY RENAL PELVIS - acts like a funnel, collecting the urine produced in the kidney and leading to a central “stem,” the ureter. URETER : Urine passes from the renal tube through tubes called ureters and into the bladder.
ORGANS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM
BLADDER : flexible and is used as storage until the urine is allowed to pass through the urethra and out of the body. ORGANS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM URETHRA : Duct that transmits urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body during urination. The female and male urinary system are very similar, differing only in the length of the urethra ORGANS OF THE URINARY SYSTEM THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING
