STUDY GUIDE AND REVISION WORKSHEET
FOR THE 1ST MIDTERM TEST
PART I. MATH VOCABULARY & KNOWLEDGE REVIEW
Topic Math Knowledge
1. Real number
Real numbers are simply the combination of rational number and irrational numbers.
• Rational numbers are numbers that can be written in the form of p/q, where p, q are integers
and q ≠ 0.
Real • Irrational numbers are not rational number and cannot be written as a fraction.
There are 7 basic properties you need to follow when working with exponents:
3. Scientific notation
Scientific notatoin is a way of writing very large or very small numbers.
Any scientific notations have the form of A 10n where 1 ≤ 𝐴 < 10 𝑛 ∈ ℤ.
Analyze
and
Step to combine like terms:
Solve
• Use the distributive rule to remove any parenthesis.
Linear
• Move the like terms next to each others.
Equation
• Add or subtract the like terms.
2. Solve equation with variables on both sides
• Use the distributive property to remove any parenthesis
• Add or subtract terms to get the variables on 1 side and the constant on the other
• Multiply or divide to isolate the variable.
PART II. PRACTICE
1 Draw lines to connect each vocabulary word with its definition.
2 Nate and Elena participate in the “Keeper for a Day” program at the zoo, where they learn about the job of
a zookeeper and help with some of the responsibilities.
Nate weights and measures several animals in the “Mouse House,”
recording the data in a table.
Part B: Nate says that repeating decimals are rational numbers. Is Nate correct? Explain.
3 On a recent homework assignment, Eli needed to solve the equation g2 = 49. He incorrectly wrote g = -7.
Part A: What is the correct solution?

11 A silicon chip is 14 nanometers thick. A nanometer is equal to 0.000000001 meter. Express the thickness of
the chip using scientific notation.
A. 1.4 × 10-9 m B. 1.4 × 10-8 m C. 1.4 × 109 m D. 1.4 × 108 m
There are approximately 330,000,000 cubic miles of water on Earth. A cubic mile is approximately
147,200,000,000 cubic feet. How much water is on Earth? Estimate using scientific notation.
A. 5 × 1017 ft3 B. 5 × 1018 ft3 C. 5 × 1019 ft3 D. 5 × 1088 ft3
12 What is the area of the bulletin board?

The number of miles from the Sun to Proxima Centauri in scientific notation is 2.5 × 10Y
A. 11 B. 8 C. 6 D. 9 E. 12 F. 13 G. 5 H. 7
The distance from the Sun to Proxima Centauri is about 7 × 10Z times greater than the distance from the Sun
to Mercury.

16 In 1902, the yearly attendance at a major league baseball park was 3.4 × 105 people.
One hundred years later, the yearly attendance was 1.7 × 106 fans.
How many times greater was the attendance in 2002 than in 1902?
Find (9.3 × 106) + (1.8 × 104). Express your answer in scientific notation.
17 There are 8 elephants in the zoo. Each elephant eats about 2.16 × 105 pounds of vegetation per year. The
zookeeper asked Nate and Elena to determine how many pounds of vegetation is required to feed all of the
elephants. They wrote their solutions in scientific notation.
19 Edy has $450 in her savings account. She deposits $40 each month. Juan has $975 in his checking account.
He writes a check for $45 each month for his cell phone bill. He also writes a check for $20 each month for
his water bill. After how many months will Edy and Juan have the same amount of money in their accounts?
20 Moira solved a problem on the board. What error did Moira make and how can she correct it? Explain.
12x + 10 = 54 - 10x
12x + 10 - 10 = 54 - 10x – 10
12x = 44 - 10x
12x - 10x = 44 - 10x + 10x
2x = 44
x = 22
21 A red candle is 8 inches tall and burns at a rate of 7 inch per hour. A blue candle is 6 inches tall and burns

at a rate of 5 inch per hour. After how many hours will both candles be the same height?
22 Naomi paints 16.5 square feet of a mural at a rate of 2 square feet per hour. Claire paints 7.5 square feet of
the mural at a rate of 4 square feet per hour. If they continue at the same rates, how many more hours will it
take for Naomi and Claire to paint an equal number of square feet?
23 Schools A and B are competing in an academic contest. At the beginning of the final round, School A has
174 points and School B has 102 points. In the final round, correct answers earn 10 points and incorrect
answers lose 6 points. School A gives the same number of correct and incorrect answers during the final
round. School B gives no incorrect answers and the same number of correct answers as School A. The contest
ends with the two schools tied.
Part A: Which equation models the scoring in the final round and the outcome of the contest?
A. 174 + 10x = 102 + 10x - 6x B. 174 + 10x - 6x = 102 + 4x
C. 174 - 6x = 102 + 10x D. 174 + 10x - 6x = 102 + 10x
Part B: How many correct answers does each school give during the final round?
24 Why does 0.999… = 1? Draw lines to connect each manipulation to its description on the right.
x = 0.999…
10x = 9.999… By definition of x
10x = 9 + 0.999… By multiplying by 10
10x = 9 + x By dividing by 9
9x = 9 By subtracting x
x=1 By splitting off integer part
