March '68

As a result of party manipulation, resentment and accusations, several thousand people of Jewish
origin left Poland after March '68. What is striking is the high level of education: the percentage of
students and post-graduates was eight times higher among them than among the general Polish
population. Engineers, doctors and economists were the most numerous. By the autumn of 1969,
nearly five hundred lecturers and scientists, including prominent and well-known figures, had applied
for permission to leave. Among the émigrés were two hundred journalists, more than sixty radio and
television workers, about a hundred musicians and visual artists. This was the result of the eminently
anti-intellectual tone of the March campaign. It is difficult to overestimate the losses Poland suffered
from the exodus of these highly educated and talented people.
