1. What are the four main advantages of using Per Unit system in power systems
computations? (4 Marks)
While performing calculations, referring quantities from one side of the
transformer to the other side serious errors may be committed. This can be avoided
by using per unit system
Voltages, currents and impedances expressed in per unit do not change when they
are referred from one side of transformer to the other side
Per unit impedances of electrical equipment of similar type usually lie within a
narrow range, when the equipment ratings are used as base values
Transformer connections do not affect the per unit values
Manufacturers usually specify the impedances of machines and transformers in per
unit or percent on name plate ratings
2. A three phase transmission line has its conductors at the corner of an equilateral triangle
with side 4.5m. The diameter of each conductor is 20mm. Find the inductance per km and
capacitance to the neutral per km of the line. (4 Marks)
3. The single line diagram of a three phase system is shown in figure below. Using the
common base Sb= 50 MVA, draw the impedance diagram in per-unit including the load
impedance. The manufacturer’s nominal ratings are given as follows:
