SİBORG VE SİBORLAŞMA
THE CYBORG AND CYBORGİZATİON
Mehmet Emin Koç – AMEA -
What is a Cyborg?
In the early 1960s, Manfred E. Clynes and Nathan S. Kline, two NASA
researchers, coined the term cyborg from the combination of the words
cybernetic and organism (Gray, Figueroa-Sarriera and Mentor 1995). Clynes and
Kline wrote: “for the exogenously extended organizational complex functioning
as an integrated homeostatic system unconsciously, we propose the term
‘cyborg.’ The cyborg deliberately controls function of the organism in order to
adapt it to new environments” (Clynes and Kline 1995). The proposed “purpose”
of the cyborg was to provide a system in which robot-like behaviors and actions
are integrated into an automatic and allostatically balanced organization that is in
some way integrated into human function, leaving humans free to explore and to
flourish.
Cyborg nedir?
In an interview, Clynes reflected upon the term: “…I thought it would be good
to have a new concept of a person who can free themselves from the constraints
of the environment to the extent that they wished. And I coined this word
cyborg.” (Gray 1995) The idea was to liberate man to explore and discover space.
It seemed necessary to afford the bodily freedom to exist in another part of the
universe without the limitations imposed by having evolved on Earth. Clynes
posed that the cyborg would enable humans to not change nature but to simply
make use of biological faculties, without having to waste energies on adjusting
the living function necessary for the maintenance of life (Gray 1995).

kültürün belirli etkileri, siborg kavramının son on yıllarda yeni bilimsel ve sosyo-
Cyborg III makes use of the abilities to both alter the products of genes, and
also insert new elements into the existing genome. Cyborg III permits the ability
to design new geno- and phenotypes, making use of knowledge to decrypt ways
to improve human nature, make humans less destructive and more creative, and
enable flourishing via the heightened enjoyment of the various satisfactions of
life (Hables 1995). This represents a profound distinction in the construct of a
cybernetic organism: the cyborg is no longer a product for the conquest of space,
but is now a contemporary paradigm to facilitate happiness and humans
flourishing.
etkilemez. Dolayısıyla Cyborg I fizyolojik iyileştirme ile ilgiliydi (Hables 1995).
Thus, the cyborg is seen as an icon of the crisis in humanism. Although the
subject of considerable debate, there is building literature claiming that the reign
of humanity is at a critical if not questionable juncture. Such uncertainty about
human futures is the face of neuro, nano, and genotechnology. The explicit
question remains what humanity might, or will “become”. These questions are
part of the movement of trans-humans (Bostrom 2005) and post-humanism
(Badmington 2000), that views the human as a collection of heterogeneous
components, a material-informational entity whose boundaries undergo
continuous construction and reconstruction (Hayles 1999). In this way, there is
no “given” or pre-established autonomous self, because the self can only be
made. Even the subjectivity of technologically unaltered individuals is perceived
as an artifact (Waters 2006). Thus, information patterns are more important – if
not – essential to the nature of being than any material instantiation.
Embodiment in a biological substrate is seen as an accident of history. rather
than an inevitability of life (Hook 2004). Based on the assumption that the
universe consists principally of information, any entity that can code process, and
sense data could considered to be “alive” (Waters 2006).
