Math Study Guide III Partial

11th Grade

I. Midpoint and Distance

Instructions: Use the formulas learned in class to solve
each problem.

1. Triangle ABC has vertices A(2,7), B(3,-7), and C(-5,-1). Find the
perimeter and the area of the triangle. Graph the triangle.

2. A circle has a diameter with endpoints at (-9, 3) and (1, -5). Find
the coordinates of the point that represents the center of the circle.
Find the circumference and the area of the circle. Graph the circle.

3. Quadrilateral PQRS has vertices P(-2, -5), Q(-3, 3), R(4, 4), and
S(5, 0). Find the perimeter of the quadrilateral and draw it.

II. Graphing Parabolas

Instructions: Identify the vertex, focus, and directrix of each
parabola. Graph it.

4. 𝒙 = 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟖𝒚 + 𝟏𝟎 5. 𝟑𝟐𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚𝟐 = 𝟖𝒚 + 𝟓𝟔

6. 𝟒𝒚 + 𝒙𝟐 = −𝟏𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏𝟐

III. Graphing Circles

Instructions: Write the equation of the circle in standard
form. Identify the center and the radius. Graph the circle.

7. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟏𝟎𝒙 − 𝟏𝟒𝒚 + 𝟒𝟗 = 𝟎 8. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏𝟔𝒙 − 𝟖𝒚 + 𝟔𝟎 = 𝟎

9. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟔𝒚 − 𝟔𝟖 = 𝟎
IV. Graphing Ellipses
Instructions: Write the equation of the ellipse in standard
form. Identify the center and graph the ellipse.

10. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 − 𝟔𝒙 − 𝟏𝟔𝒚 + 𝟗 = 𝟎

11. 𝟗𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟕𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏𝟐𝒚 + 𝟏𝟕𝟏 = 𝟎

12. 𝟐𝟓𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒚𝟐 − 𝟐𝟓𝟎𝒙 + 𝟖𝒚 + 𝟓𝟐𝟗 = 𝟎

V. Graphing Hyperbolas
Instructions: Identify the vertical and horizontal asymptotes
of each rational function. Graph it.

13. 𝟒𝒙^𝟐 − 𝟐𝟓𝒚^𝟐 − 𝟖𝒙 − 𝟓𝟎𝒚 − 𝟏𝟐𝟏 = 𝟎

14. 𝟒𝒙𝟐 − 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟒𝟎𝒙 − 𝟖𝒚 + 𝟒𝟖 = 𝟎

15. 𝟐𝟓𝒙𝟐 − 𝟗𝒚𝟐 + 𝟐𝟓𝟎𝒙 + 𝟑𝟔𝒚 + 𝟑𝟔𝟒 = 𝟎

VI. Identifying Conic Sections

Instructions: Write each equation in standard form. State
whether the graph of the equation is a parabola, circle,
ellipse, or hyperbola. Then graph the equation.

16. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝟐𝒚𝟐 + 𝟑𝟎𝟖𝒚 + 𝟏, 𝟎𝟓𝟔 = 𝟎

17. 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟏𝟎𝒚 − 𝒙 + 𝟐𝟏 = 𝟎

18. 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟔𝒚 − 𝟏𝟓 = 𝟎

19. 𝟑𝒙𝟐 − 𝒚𝟐 + 𝟑𝟎𝒙 + 𝟒𝟖 = 𝟎
