EXPERIMENT 1: ISOCHORIC PROCESS IN PERFECT GAS

1.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to-:

1.1 conduct appropriate experiments in groups according to the standard of procedures.

1.2 analyse critically the experimental data in relation to the theoretical aspects.

1.3 write the appropriate report based on the experimental results individually.

2.0 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO) / PROGRAMMES LEARNING OUTCOMES

(PLO)

PSYCHOMOTOR
Organize appropriately experiments according to the Standard
CLO 3
Operating Procedures
Apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering
PLO 5
and IT tools to well-defined engineering problems, with an awareness of
the limitations

3.0 OBJECTIVE
To determine the relationship between the pressure and temperature of a gas with fixed
mass at constant volume.

1
4.0 APPARATUS
1st Law Thermodynamic Apparatus (Model B1171)

5.0 PROCEDURE

START-UP

1. Connect the equipment to the power supply.

2. Perform a quick inspection to make sure that the equipment is in proper working
condition.
3. Ensure that all valves are initially closed.
4. Switch on the main power supply, the PT-101, PT-102 and TT-101 displays should lit up.
5. The equipment is now ready for use.

SHUT-DOWN

1. Ensure all valves are closed.

2. Open GV-101 fully.
3. If the tanks are under pressure:
i. Open BV-102 and GV-101.
ii. Operate vacuum hand pump at BV-105 until both tanks reaches 0 bar.
iii. Close all valves.
If the tanks are under vacuum:
iv. Open BV-101 and GV-101.
v. Operate hand pump until both tanks reaches 0 bar.
vi. Close all valves.
4. Switch off the main power supply.

2
6.0 EXPERIMENT & RESULT
Experiment 1A: Compression of Gas

Experiment 1B: Expansion of Gas

EXPERIMENT 1A: COMPRESSION OF GAS

Relationship between Pressure and Temperature of a Gas at Constant Volume

PROCEDURE:

1. Perform the start-up procedure.

2. Open BV-101 and GV-101.
3. Record the initial pressure reading on PT-101 and the temperature of air in T-101.
4. Operate the handpump.
5. When the pressure in T-102 reaches 0.5 bar, stop the compressing operation.
6. Read the TT-101 value.
7. Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 for 0.8 bar, 1.0 bar, 1.2 bar and 1.5 bar.
8. Record all pressure and temperature measurements accordingly.
9. Perform the shut-down procedure.

REMINDER

Ensure that the valves BV-101 and BV-102 are closed tightly to prevent air from
entering or exiting the cylinders unintentionally.

EXPERIMENT 1B: EXPANSION OF GAS

Relationship between Pressure and Temperature of a Gas at Constant Volume

PROCEDURE:

1. Perform the start-up procedure.

2. Open BV-101 and GV-101.
3. Record the initial pressure reading on PT-101 and the temperature of air in T-101.
4. Operate the vacuum handpump.
5. When the pressure in T-102 reaches -0.2 bar, stop the vacuuming operation.
6. Read the TT-101 value.
7. Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 for -0.3 bar, -0.4 bar, -0.5 bar and -0.6 bar.
8. Record all pressure and temperature measurements accordingly.
9. Perform the shut-down procedure.

REMINDER

Ensure that the valves BV-101 and BV-102 are closed tightly to prevent air from
entering or exiting the cylinders unintentionally.

Handle the hand pump P-102 with care. Take turns with others if needed. 4

7.0 DISCUSSION

1. What are the assumptions made in this experiment?

2. From the sets of reading in Experiment 1A and Experiment 1B, compare the
experimental value with the theoretical value. Discuss why the experimental value is
deviated from the theoretical value?
3. Discuss the results obtained in the experiment in accordance to 1st Law of
Thermodynamics.

8.0 CONCLUSION

Deduce a conclusion from the experimental results and from your observation.
