DIWALI DHAMAKA!!!
Section A
Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the biggest and grandest festivals
celebrated mainly in India. It is an old belief that Goddess Lakshmi visits
people’s houses on Diwali night to bless them. Hence, all the devotees
clean and decorate their houses with lights, flowers, rangoli, candles,
diyas, garlands etc. for the festival.
Bombay Scottish School, Mahim too planned a 3 day online Diwali
celebration for all its students.Grade 4 integrated each subject into their Diwali
Dhamaka. Let us take a look at all the planning and preparations that went
into this wonderful celebration.
The three days were divided into periods as follows:

Question 1: Budgeting Expenses


Period: English
Topic: Indian Place Value and International Place Value System
Elizabeth(a student from Canada) had an opportunity to celebrate
Diwali with one of the Indian families during her study tour in
India.She was asked to budget the expenses involved during the
celebration and write an essay about the ‘Festival of Lights’.She
wrote the essay describing the activities during the festival, however
she could not comprehend the Indian Place Value System.Help her
by converting the Indian place value system into the International
Place Value System so that she can complete her assignment.

Question 2: JOY OF GIFTING

Topic: Shapes and 3D objects
In their craft period they wrapped gift boxes of various shapes and
sizes to gift their loved ones during the celebration.However to buy
the gift wrapping paper they had to find out the properties of the
3D boxes. The students did so by applying their knowledge of 3D
figures and filled in the table shared below:

Question 3: SAY NO TO FIRE CRACKERS
Period: Math
Topic: Mathematical operations
Amidst the festivities, we tend to forget that bursting crackers lead
to noise and air pollution.Hence the students decided to have an
eco friendly Diwali by using firecrackers only to solve their magic
square.Kindly complete the magic squares using the clue that the
sum of the every horizontal, vertical and slanting line will be the
same):

Question 4:YUMMY IN MY TUMMY
Period: Science
Topic: Mathematical operations
The next thing that comes to mind when you think of Diwali is
sweets and snacks – and plenty of them. They range in shape,
color, flavor and taste simply divine.Indian sweets are made using
milk products or nuts as a base, and the savory snacks are made
with flour and vegetable stuffings.They are served at various points
over the festivities along with curries and rich dishes using pure
desi ghee.Thus making Diwali a feast for the eyes, and stomach.
Grade 4 decided to find out the nutritional benefits of these sweets
and savouries.With the help of the clues complete the table below.

Question 5: MIRROR ME! RANGOLI MAKING
Period: Art
Topic: Symmetry
Rangoli,is a folk art from India in which patterns are created on the
floor using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand
or flower petals. The purpose of rangoli is decoration, and it is
thought to bring good luck. Grade 4 were asked to complete the
Rangoli pattern in their art book using the Red line as the line of
Symmetry.You may use colour pencils to colour the same.
